8 Radiational cross-linked polyolefines Radiational cross-linked polyolefines Polymer carbon chains before cross-linking Hydrogen atoms breaking free during radial cross-linking What's that polyolefin? Polyolefin are producing as the result of polymerization of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The most usable polyolefin are: - polyethylene (PE), - ethylene-vinyl acetate (copolymer, EVA). Kinds of polyethylene Lineal polyethylene of low density (LLDPE). Polyethylene of low density (LDPE). Polyethylene of medium density (MDPE). Polyethylene of high density (HDPE). Uncross-linked polyethylene In sprite of many advantages (excellent dielectric properties, good mechanical and chemical properties, easy processing) uncross-linked polyethylene has many faults. Efficacy way to improve the parameters of polyethylene is its cross-linking by radial method. In what consists the radial cross-linking process? Thermoplastics (for instance: polyethylene) are composed of long carbon chains in a random arrangement. Radiation causes dome of hydrogen atoms breaking free from the polymers. In effect two close-placed polymer chains connect in place where the hydrogen atoms have been removed. It's forming the strong connection of chains called crosslinks (look at the drawings alongside). If that radial cross-linked polyethylene will be heated excess the temperature of crystals melting, we obtain soft flexible rubber material and not ductile-fluid mass like in the instance of uncross-linked polyethylene. Radpol enterprise has only the accelerator for radial cross-linking and for industrial using in Poland. Memory shape Polyethylene thereupon radial cross-linking obtain the property called shape memory, and it's exploited in the manufacturing of heat shrinkable products. First step is to produce the object made of polyethylene and of shape which shall it come after shrinking (for instance tube of diameter 100 mm). Next the object is radial cross-linked in the accelerator. During cross-linking process the object is marking down the shape. If the object is heated excess the crystals melting temperature, it's coming back to its initial original shape (tubing of 150 mm diameter shrinks to the diameter of 100 mm). Heat shrinkable products come to the shape of object on which are they shrunk and they form tight adhered layer of insulation, protective, anticorrosive and decorative coating. Comparison of not cross-linked polyethylene and radiational cross-linked polyethylene Uncross-linked polyethylene Radial cross-linked polyethylene Connected polymer's carbon chains in the temperature excess 120 C in the temperature excess 120 C it softens and conducts original shape stays as ductile-fluid mass (it has shape memory ), it's soft and flexible max. operating temperature max. operating temperature up to +70 C even up to +135 C don't withstand the thermal shock withstand the thermal shock up to +200 C (4 hours) (even up to +250 C) stress corrosion susceptible totally stress corrosion resistance low resistance for material creeping better resistance for cold creeping chemical resistance chemical resistance for aggressive factors solvent-soluble almost totally insoluble in solvents (less or more less swells) low mechanical strengthour high mechanical strength partial discharge resistant high partial discharge resistance 6

9 Shrinking instruction Shrinking instruction Assembling of radpol's heat shrinkable fittings is easy and fast. In order to reach durable and efficient insulation, the below mentioned rules shall be applied. Tools Heat shrinkable fitting is shrinking with a help of hot air blowers, propane-butane gas torch (yellow soft flame) or others heat sources able to heat the heat shrinkable equipment up to +120 C. Shrinking of heat shrinkable tubing Preparing of object' surface on which the heat shrinkable tube shall be shrink 1. Clean and degrease the surface by means of solvent imbibed tissue. 2. Wipe PCV insulated cable surface with fine abrasive cloth and the surface of PE insulated cables preheat with a help of hot air. 3. Metal parts wipe with abrasive cloth and heat them with flame. Preparing of heat shrinkable tubing 1. Choose the tubing of required insulation parameters and required dimensions (dimension of tube recovered shall be smaller than the circuit of object on which the tube will be put on). Shrinking 1. Draw the tubing on the insulated surface. 2. Turn the temperature bottom of hot air gun or burner between +120 and +200 C. Shrinking temperature shall not exceed +200 C - in other case it could follow the overheating of material the heat shrinkable tubing is made of. 3. Start shrinking at the center of tubing. Heat the tubing around to gain uniform shrinkage. Middle part of tube has to precisely cleave to the surface of insulated object. 4. Shrink the tubing toward from middle of tube to the ends. Tubing shall be heat evenly, moving the heat source on its surface. Correct shrunk tubing should be smooth without any tube blisters and notches. 5. If the tubing is covered inside by the adhesive, then the adhesive shall flow out on both ends of tube. 6. Leave the insulated object for cooling. Shrinking of large diameters' heat shrinkable tubing on the used lamp posts (renovation) Preparing of lamppost 1. Disassemble the lamp' element, for instance: lighting fitting precluding the heat shrinkable tube putting. 2. Clean and prime the uncover lamppost. Preparing of heat shrinkable tubing 1. Choose the tubing of required insulation parameters and required dimensions (look at the table on page no. 11). Middle part of tube has to precisely cleave to the surface of lamppost. 4. Shrink the tubing toward from bottom to up. Tubing shall be heat evenly, moving the heat source on its surface. Correct shrunk tubing should be smooth without any tube blisters and notches. 5. If the tubing is covered inside by the adhesive, then the adhesive shall flow out on both ends of tube. 6. Leave the insulated lamppost for cooling. 7

10 Shrinking instruction Technical data and exploitation properties of heat shrinkable tubing Shrinking of heat shrinkable breakouts Proceeding way and sequence of actions in shrinking process of breakouts are identical like for shrinking of heat shrinkable thin wall, medium and thick wall tubing (look at page no. 7). Shrinking of heat shrinkable end caps Proceeding way and sequence of actions in shrinking process of end caps are identical like for shrinking of heat shrinkable large diameters' tubing (look at page no. 7). Technical data and exploitation properties of heat shrinkable tubing Material Heat shrinkable tubes are made of polyethylene radial cross-linked. They make excellent insulation and sealing. They make the layer of insulating, protective, anticorrosive and decorative coating. Applied as the part of final product, they increase the final technical level of that product. They protect the line pipe against atmospheric corrosion and soil corrosion. They have high resistance to changing weather. Moisture resistance. Heat shrinkable products receive the shape of object, on which they are shrinking, and thanks to that their mechanic protection is increased. They have strong shrinking power and infinite storage time. They don't undergo fatigue corrosion. They are fungus resistant, mildew and aggressive factors resistant, for instance: animals' urine, saline solution applied on the roads in winter. They act as cathodic protection, consisting in pushing of protective potential of direction of more negative potentials. Color Standard colors of heat shrinkable thin wall, medium and thick wall tubing are presented in the table (look at pages no. 12 to 15). Different colors of tubes (for instance: gray, fluorescent) manufactured on special request. Heat shrinkable tubing of large diameter are black. Length Standard length of heat shrinkable tubing is 1m. There is possible to manufacture the tubing up to 38/19 diameter in different sections, for instance: 20 cm, 50 cm, 5 m, 10 m, 50 m, 100 m (max m). Long tubes are reeled on spools. Tubing of diameters bigger than 50/18 can be executed in sections of maximum length of 1,2 m. On special request we manufacture the tubes of different diameters and insulating properties. We guarantee short delivery time for special requests. Shrinking temperature Shrinking temperature for all kinds of heat shrinkable tubing amounts from +120 up to +200 C. In case the used temperature was higher than 200 C, there can tread the overheating of material of which the heat shrinkable tubes are made. 8
