4 Speaker Programme LEAN IMMERSION PROGRAMME 2013 Keynote Presentation: It s the System Stupid! Professor John Seddon Who called the Toyota System lean? What would Taiichi Ohno have said about that? What did Ohno say about codifying method (writing tools)? John Seddon is adamant that lean has been a profound failure. While change by tools and projects appeals to conventional managers the intervention only serves to reinforce rather than challenge management thinking. John is as vociferous about the better way; those who follow his Vanguard Method achieve outstanding results economic benchmarks equivalent to Ohno s achievements in Toyota. How did Ohno teach his managers? Did he give them training in tools in order to solve problems they thought they had? Answers to the questions and compelling evidence of what works, what doesn t work, and why in John s keynote address. External Case Study: Reducing complexity to accelerate transformation Jim Boughton Head of Global Complexity Reduction GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare For most manufacturing companies, the bulk of lean deployment occurs in the factory, however, we often see the overloading of a constrained resource with little headspace to achieve effective transformation. Using his experience from Corus and their automotive business partners (e.g. Jaguar Land Rover) and GlaxoSmithKline, Jim will illustrate that reducing complexity within all areas of the organisation, from manufacturing/supply chain to the commercial side of operations, you can build operational capacity from the start of your programme. Mike will walk us through the practical approach taken using VSM, how consultants were used to support, some of the outputs & work streams, and future plans for how lean methodology will be integrated with their supply chain strategy and existing WCM program. The company s Bristol facility, Accolade Park, has transformed its global supply chain enabling them to compete in a domestic climate of rising duty and aggressive retailer pricing. The site has been built with a lean philosophy since its inception and in this presentation Richard will illustrate the challenges that their business has faced and their journey to becoming a world class manufacturing site. Richard will prepare delegates for the tour of the site, identifying areas where the company has faced challenges when making improvements and how they overcame them. However, the most successful of businesses do this by enabling the workforce to experience personal success. In this workshop we will explore how to build the structure and elements for an engaged, driven and motivated workforce. We will also look at the interaction of business leadership, operations leadership, accountability and empowerment. Tom will illustrate linkng actions to value and how to hold people accountable for action, so that they know the importance of their actions. The workshop will also demonstrate how to develop not just people's abilities, but also their confidence and desire to drive improvement. This hands-on workshop will enable delegates to evaluate the effectiveness of exemplar visual management devices. Gill will explain what makes a visual management device fit for purpose and the role visual management devices play in a lean system. Through group activity delegates will consider the role that the visual management devices play in a lean management system and will enable delegates to identify examples of good and bad practice in the examples given.
