The port as an enabler of the smart grid Theodoros Theodoropoulos (SEAbility Ltd) Inte-Transit Training 19 November 2014, Valencia, Spain

Overview Introduction Smart grid The port as a smart grid enabler Wrap-up and conclusions

Introduction Ports are facing challenges regarding sustainability and energy efficiency Policies for energy liberation and promotion of renewables supports the Green power concepts However green power is not a plug and play solution Intelligent energy management strategies are required in order to utilize renewables (Offshore/ onshore wind, solar ocean, biomasses) Training workshop, Valencia, Spain -19/11/2014

Introduction In addition to direct use of renewables, a port s energy efficiency can be enhanced by Attuning demand and supply of energy by flexible demand management, instantaneous load shedding (both directions), energy labelling, intelligent storage Increase the use of electric transport within a port Training workshop, Valencia -19/11/2014

Introduction Maritime port related environmental benefits from smart grid adoption Air quality Less noise Energy efficient consumption

Overview Introduction Smart grid The port as a smart grid enabler Wrap-up and conclusions Training workshop, Valencia -19/11/2014

Smart grids: Definition Smart (electricity)grids= Use of Information Technology to: Integrate CO2 friendly energy sources and sinks Decrease cost of energy consumption Enable resilient and reliable operation of the electric grid Increase consumer energy awareness

26/11/14 8

Smart grids: Schematics

Smart grids: facts and estimations reduced CO2 emissions by 12-18% by 2030 for every dollar, the return is about $2.80 to $6 to the broader economy

Smart grids: Architecture Maritime ports

Smart grid: applications Maritime related smart grid applications Demand response and consumer energy efficiency Renewables generation Energy storage Electric transportation

Case study: demand response Motivation In an electricity grid, electricity consumption and production must balance at all times; any significant imbalance could cause grid instability or severe voltage fluctuations, and cause failures within the grid Peak demand is often treated by turning expensive back up power plants on. RES integration requires grid elasticity and quick control mechanisms to ensure the power system equilibrium

Case study: demand response Remedy: Changes in electric usage by end-use customers from their normal consumption patterns in response to changes in the price of electricity over time, or to incentive payments designed to induce lower electricity use at times of high wholesale market prices or when system reliability is jeopardized.

Smart grid: Demand response strategies

Smart grid: flexible loads in a port Electric vehicles, machinery?? Shore side electricity supply The EU Directive on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure cites: Member States shall ensure that the need for shore-side electricity supply for inland waterway vessels and sea-going ships in maritime and inland ports is assessed in their NPFs Such shore-side electricity supply shall be installed as a priority in ports of the TEN-T Core Network, and in other ports, by 31 December 2025, unless there is no demand, and the costs are disproportionate to the benefits, including environmental benefits.

The port as a smart grid enabler Port authorities should assume an extended role in the promotion of introducing a smart grid and by setting up with the help of the energy providers the necessary infrastructure.

Overview Introduction Smart grid The port as a smart grid enabler Wrap-up and conclusions

The port as a smart grid enabler Are there any viable business scenarios available? Optimization of the terminal s demand including energy storage systems and renewables (a detailed scenario will be presented) Shore to ship supply and more electric vehicles and equipment, circulating in the port will enable demand response capabilities

The port as a smart grid enabler: terminal load analysis and recommendations Electric simulations of a mid to small scale port: terminal load analysis smart grid scenario construction Energy balance study benefit identification

The port as a smart grid enabler: terminal load analysis

The port as a smart grid enabler: terminal load analysis

The port as a smart grid enabler: terminal load analysis

The port as a smart grid enabler: observations on the load profile Cranes cause fluctuations to the overall demand profile these fluctuations cannot be compensated by shaping reefer, office or lighting profiles since they vary on a 5s scale however energy storage systems could help decrease the variability Additionally renewable energy sources could help reduce consumption and reduce C02

The port as a smart grid enabler: business scenario 1 energy storage unit 1 PV unit 1 wind turbine

The port as a smart grid enabler: business scenario

The port as a smart grid enabler: business scenario results

The port as a smart grid enabler: business scenario results

The port as a smart grid enabler: business scenario results Realistic and cost efficient scenario

The port as a smart grid enabler: business scenario results

The port as a smart grid enabler: shore side electricity

The port as a smart grid enabler: shore side electricity In 2009 C02, sulphate pollution approx. 5% due to shipping Health and environmental impact depends on how near the emissions are to the receptor 70% of ship emissions released 400km from land Emissions are directly appropriate to total fuel consumption!

The port as a smart grid enabler: shore side electricity Shore connection technology eliminates ships need to run their auxiliary engines at berth by providing electricity directly from onshore sources Eliminates ship engine emissions in the port area Improves working conditions in ports Generates savings as onshore electricity may be cheaper!

The port as a smart grid enabler: shore side electricity

Training workshop, Valencia-19/11/201

Conclusions Existing port resources could be used in an efficient manner Investments required to plan, procure and install RES, Estorage systems Ship shore supply decreases emissions and possibly energy cost
