Greenfuel - Global solution for sustainable national energy systems Hydrogen Net Annual Meeting innogy SE Jens Kanacher 25 April 2017
1 innogy at a glance 2 Why do we need a greenfuel? 3 Why should we think globally? 4 How could it look like?
innogy at a glance Carved out of RWE, innogy focuses on renewable generation, grid & infrastructure and retail Grid & Infrastructure Germany East #1 largest electricity DSO in Germany 1 Decarbonisation Decentralisation #3 worldwide in offshore wind by installed capacity 4 3.1GW installed capacity 5 Renewables Germany Netherlands/Belgium United Kingdom France Spain Portugal Poland Italy Retail Germany Netherlands/Belgium United Kingdom East #1 largest electricity retailer in Germany 2 23 m. customers 3 Digitalisation 1 Based on distributed volume; as of Based on volume sold; as of With respect to the Retail segment, the term customers refers to customer contracts (electricity and gas contracts counted separately) throughout the presentation. 4 Source: Bloomberg New Energy Finance; asset owner database; as of March As of 31 December 2015; pro-rata view, excluding Zephyr portfolio. Excluding 0.3GW renewables capacity from fully consolidated participations related to the Grid & Infrastructure segment. 3
1 innogy at a glance 2 Why do we need a greenfuel? 3 Why should we think globally? 4 How could it look like?
Why do we need a greenfuel? Germany is aiming for ambitious greenhouse gas reduction until 2050 Greenhouse gas emissions in Germany in Mio. t CO2-equivalents % energy efficiency low-carbon electricity generation electrification of mobility and heat renewable energy carrier energy traffic Industrial processes agriculture others Source: Umweltbundesamt Treibhausneutrales Deutschland in Jahr 2050 (2013), Nationale Trendtabellen für die deutsche Berichterstattung atmosphärischer Emissionen , eigene Analyse innogy SE Jens Kanacher 25 April
Why do we need a greenfuel? Greenfuels can be applied in various sectors for green house gas reduction energy sector mobility industry Backup-power plants long-term storage ships aviation Feedstock for basic chemicals heavy trucks innogy SE Jens Kanacher 25 April
Why do we need a greenfuel? Various greenfuels will be applied methanol will be one of them Advantages of methanol compared to other greenfuels > Simple handling due to it s liquid state > High volumetric energy density > Important feedstock for the chemical industry (basic chemical) > Suitable as fuel for ships, trucks and cars > Versatile use in fuel cells, combustion engines and gas turbines > Can be blended into conventional fuels (gasoline) innogy SE Jens Kanacher 25 April
1 innogy at a glance 2 Why do we need a greenfuel? 3 Why should we think globally? 4 How could it look like?
Why should we think globally? greenfuels enable a global exchange of renewable energy Island Geothermal MEOH Marokko Wind (Onshore): Germany Wind (Onshore): Dubai PV Advantages of a global greenfuel exchange Lower production costs Increased resource efficiency Less not in my backyard challenges Global portfolio-effects compensate for local fluctuation Development potential for exporting countries win / win Simple handling and transport are fundamental requirements to raise these advantages. Liquid energy carriers have an advantage towards gaseous. innogy SE Jens Kanacher 25 April 2017
Why should we think globally? Import of greenfuels has positive effects on national energy systems here: electricity Comparison of german electricity system 1 layout and costs Photovoltaic (GW) Wind (GW) Backup power plants (GW) Power-to-Fuel (GW) 7 30 Batteries (GWh) greenfuel import (TWh) System costs (EUR/MWh) % Without greenfuel import With greenfuel import 1 Annual electricity demand 475 TWh, 100% renewable energy system, technology costs for 2050, no exchange of electricity with neighboring countries innogy SE Jens Kanacher 25 April
Why should we think globally? Cheap imported greenfuels can have additional positive effects on other energy sectors Examples where greenfuels fit well with other applications 1. To decarbonize room heating, > A combination of conventional gas/oil heating and imported green fuels may be cheaper for investors than installing a heat pump (which in many buildings need constructional changes to be efficient) > On top, µchp could provide additional benefits back in the electricity system 2. To decarbonize mobility > Use combustion engines or fuel cells in future cars for CO 2 -neutral mobility > Convert also older cars towards CO 2 -reduction (fuel blends) or neutrality (pure greenfuel operation) innogy SE Jens Kanacher 25 April
