9 Advanced Reactor Projects R&D in new nuclear power plant concepts is quite extensive (light water, heavy water, fast reactors, high temperature gas, etc.) The Advanced Nuclear Power Plant Programme has centred mainly on light water reactors, through participation in the following programmes: EPRI ALWR program and adaptation of these designs to Europe Through the Advanced Nuclear Power Plants Project (PIE No ) Duration: Budget: 43 M euro (7.150 M pesetas) Adaptation of the designs to Europe was continued in the European Advanced Power Plant project, PCAE EUR programme Begun in 1991: Spanish participation is currently in the frame of the PCAE project
10 Advanced Reactor Projects Scope: Electric power sector participation in the preparation of the requirements documents of USA electric utilities for future nuclear power plants (URD) and their certification by the NRC. Nuclear industry collaboration in the development of: the two passive reactors (Westinghouse s AP600 and General Electric s SBWR of the program; GE s evolutionary reactor ABWR, mainly with regard to its synergies with the SBWR; the adaptation to Europe of the AP600 designs (Projects EPP/AP1000) and the ABWR (ESBWR project) Electric power sector collaboration in the certification of the AP600 and ABWR designs by the NRC
