2 The National Road Safety Partnership Program Why act? Every life lost on our roads is one too many and, in most cases, it s avoidable. The fact is that driver behaviour is the number one cause of accidents. When you consider vehicle-related incidents remain the highest risk of injury to workers in Australia, and is the highest organisational risk for most businesses, why wouldn t you act? How much is poor road safety practices costing your business s workers, brand and operationally? What is the? The National Road Safety Partnership Program () is a collaborative network established to support Australian businesses to develop a positive road safety culture. It s about saving lives, without the red tape. An industry-led initiative, the aims to assist Australian businesses and organisations to improve the safety of their employees and help reduce the nation s road trauma, through unity and collaboration. Improving road safety is simply good business. What does it do? The provides free networking, support and education to assist organisations in making road safety part of their organisational culture. The can help businesses of all sizes, across all sectors, to build road safety initiatives specific to their own workplace and beyond. Importantly, it intends to bring together and promote conversations between businesses, government and researchers to help Australian organisations develop a strong safety culture something that is critical to running a successful business. There are no road safety secrets; good road safety practices are simply good for business. McColl s Transport Case Study Since the officially launched in 2014 as part of the UN Decade of Action on Road Safety, it has become clear that industry s road safety leaders are eager to share their knowledge with their peers and other sectors to help them recognise that being safe is not a cost but an integral part of good business. The has been developed by an industryled Steering Committee, is funded principally by a government coalition, and delivered by the ARRB Group. July
3 What s in it for me? If a company manages both its vehicles and drivers effectively, it will see significant operational and financial benefits, as well as improvements in safety and environmental performance a win-win approach 1. Work-related traffic comprises a major proportion of total vehicular traffic on our road networks 1 but many businesses are still unaware of the direct and indirect costs they absorb as a result of crashes. Businesses that pay attention to road safety in their operations get superior results to those that do not (Road Safety Taskforce, 2011). In addition, companies are becoming increasingly concerned about their brand image and poor road safety performance can be harmful to a company s image and used to challenge their corporate responsibility credentials. 1. Road Safety Taskforce (2011). White Paper: Making the Business Case for Road Safety Investment to Achieve Sustainable Road Mobility. Ed. Michelin. France, Boulogne-Billancourt Road safety activities are highly cost-effective and provide a higher rate of return than any other investment in transport. Asian Development Bank Companies can, and should, use this influence to demonstrate leadership in the area of road safety as they do in technology and other areas. Road Safety Taskforce Driving his motivation for safety excellence is the philosophy that great organisations are differentiated by the culture and values underpinning what they do.
