1 The Canadian Weed Science Society / Société canadienne de malherbologie (CWSS-SCM) is a vibrant scientific society (membership of about 130 people) that meets annually to present new research findings and to discuss current issues on a wide range of topics in weed science. Our membership includes university, government, and industry staff who specialize in research, teaching, extension, and regulation of weed-related topics. We host an energetic 4-day annual meeting in late November, this year at the Radisson Saskatoon from November 20 th to 23 rd The plenary on Wednesday, November 22, is aimed at agronomists and focuses on innovation in weed science. Four experts in various fields of weed science will be speakers. Dr. Jesper Rasmussen, an Associate Professor with the University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of four main speakers. He is trained as a weed scientist but also works on conservation tillage, grasslands, and cultivars adapted to organic agriculture. He will be presenting on the use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery and site-specific weed management and phenotyping. In 2016, his research team were able to implement pre-harvest control of perennial weeds in cereals based on maps generated from UAV images. Kristina Polziehn from Sturgeon County, Alberta is a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag) and Certified Crop Advisor in Alberta and is an independent agronomist with grain producers in northern Alberta. She began her company, Axiom Agronomy Ltd., in 2014 providing crop consulting, soil sampling and prescription nutrient mapping. She also serves as a dealer for AgPixel in Alberta, assisting customers in acquiring, processing, and analyzing aerial agricultural data from UAVs and manned aircraft systems. Subject matter experts from Bayer and BASF will be discussing how life science companies are embracing the rapid changes in technology as a way to provide new information and tools to support the agriculture. Interactive concurrent sessions will be held Wednesday afternoon focused on managing resistant weeds and novel uses of leading-edge technology to improve and understand weed control in agriculture.
