4 About KVK The Krishi Vignan Kendra (KVK) is a concept project of ICAR for transferring scientific agricultural knowledge and new agricultural technologies among the farming communities for betterment and new opportunities for their better future and employment. The KVKs may be setup directly under ICAR or State / Central Agriculture Universities or Non Government Organisations but are 100% funded by ICAR. Shri Mohan Sinha Mehta, Founder of VBS, also chaired the committee which advised each district have a KVK. First Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) was established by Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1974 in Pondicherry. A KVK is a district level center established for spreading the scientific agricultural knowledge upto the farmer field. It operates in a specified area and has several activities like conducting ON as well as OFF campus trainings in various disciplines, conducting frontline demonstration and on farm testing (OFT) of technologies on farmers fields. KVK also has various extension activities like trainings, exhibitions, field days, seminars, Kisan Melas, Kisan Goshtis and also contributes in mass Media like All India Radio and Doordarshan programmes. Krishi Vigyan Kendras also publish popular articles and Extn. Literature like folders, booklets, technical reports etc for transferring knowledge to farmers.
5 Objectives of KVK To demonstrate the latest technologies in agriculture & allied subjects with a view to reduce time lag between technology generation and adoption. To test & verify the technology in socio-economic conditions of the farmers with a view to study production constraints and to modify the technologies to make them appropriate. To impart training to the practicing farmers and rural youth by the methods of Teaching by Doing and Learning by Doing. To get first hand scientific feed back from the fields and passing it to the research system in order to keep the scientist abreast with the performance of the technologies and the farming problems, so that they re-orient their research, education and training. To provide training & communication support to the district level development agencies like agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries and NGOs in their extension programmes. To develop extension models to be adopted by general extension system for large scale multiplications.
6 Mandate of KVK To conduct on farm testing for identifying technologies in terms of location specific sustainable land use systems. To organize training to update the Extension Personnel with emerging advances in agricultural research on regular basis. To organize short and long term vocational training courses in agriculture and allied vocations for the farmers and rural youths with emphasis on learning by doing for higher production on farms and generating self employment. To organize front-line demonstrations on various crops to generate production data and feed back information. Extension programmes to create awareness about improved technologies among farmers.
7 Thrust Area To increase the productivity of Maize, Black gram, Groundnut, Wheat, Mustard and Soybean through adoption of improved production technology. Popularization and establishment of fruit orchards and vegetable cultivation. Use of improved farm implements to reduce the cost of cultivation Popularization of non-conventional/renewable energy sources. Enhancement of livestock productivity through up-gradation of local germplasm, balanced & low cost nutrition and better management practices with emphasis on small ruminants. Upliftment of socio-economic status of women by introducing income generating activities.
