4 Ban and Reduction in Use of AGPs Changes ongoing Legislation driven more countries committing to ban in future Canada From 2017 onwards no AGP or preventive AB in animal feed Consumer driven McDonalds is limiting the use of antibiotics in its chicken OECD Country Australia - Legislative status of country in terms of animal use of antimicrobials - Ban on antimicrobial growth promoters No, but some AGPs are banned (fluoroquinolones, avoparcin, virginiamycin, etc.) (Australian Commission on safety and quality in health care, 2013). EU Yes. All AGP banned in 2006 Japan No (Maron et al., 2013) Mexico South Korea United States Yes, AGP were banned in 2007 with some exceptions (avoparcin, vancomycin, bacitracin, tylosin, virginiamycin, etc.) (Maron et al., 2013). Yes, since 2011 the use AGP has been discontinued until a veterinary oversight system can be put in place (USDA, 2011) No. The FDA released voluntary guidelines for the industry to withdraw the use as growth promoters of medically important antibiotics (US Food and Drug Administration, 2013). 23 Concluding remarks Currently approx. 5% of the 1,2 bn tons of feed contain PFA s. Digestibility enhancement, feed efficiency, FCR, AGP s replacement now key factors in PFA usage. More large scale livestock (global) operations now using PFA s. Global demand increasing less AGP s, reducing feed costs, emissions, improve feed efficiency. Shift in consumer tastes preferences favouring PFA s usage By 2030 PFA inclusion could reach 20% of global feed tonnage
