4 RESEARCH At Beck s, we have one of the largest seed testing and breeding programs in the Eastern Corn Belt. Since we re farmers too, our research is driven to reflect what is most important to farmers germination, emergence, standability, plant health, and yield. Multistage Testing Our intense multistage testing program allows us to select and develop products that will out-yield the competition and provide a distinct regional advantage. Because of our regionalization, our product selection program has an advantage over the multinational companies. Corn Breeding Our corn breeders utilize the latest breeding technologies, including rapid inbred development through the use of dihaploid technology. They also practice genome-wide selection with a state-of-the-art molecular marker laboratory. Our incredibly fast trait introgression program allows us to quickly incorporate the latest traits that customers demand. Beck s corn breeding program involves breeding nurseries in Chile, We accomplish this regional advantage through our replicated testing and Choice Trials, an on-farm testing program. The replicated testing program is used to identify products in an early stage with commercial potential. Then, we utilize our Choice Trials program to test pre-commercial products and specifically identify the best area of adaptation. With our research team intensively characterizing the products at these sites, we ensure the highest performing products are identified and offered to customers. Although the green hybrid won more plots across the country, the red hybrid was the best, in our marketing area, and therefore the product we would choose to sell. Some of our competitors have larger marketing areas and would prefer to raise fewer products. They pick products that do a good job across a large geography rather than the best job in a small geography. For them, it s more about profits and economy of scale. On-farm research is costly, time consuming, and often confusing. That s why we developed our Practical Farm Research (PFR) program. Practical Farm Research (PFR) We conduct more than 5 different studies across multiple locations (500+ acres) to learn how different management practices and new technologies perform in field environments. Simply put, PFR is research focused with the farmer in mind. Then, we share this valuable information through our annual field shows, PFR book, website, and winter meetings. 6 LIBERTYLINK Studies have shown early weed competition (-12 inches) in soybeans can reduce yields by 6-10%*. Not controlling glyphosate resistant weeds can reduce yields by more than 30%.
