1 Epoxy Curing Agents and Modifiers ANCAMIDE 702-B75 Curing Agent DESCRIPTION Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent is a member of a new series of reactive polyamides developed for use in te curing of epoxy resins in solvent-based surface coatings applications. Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent is an epoxy adduct of te low viscosity polyamide curing agent, Ancamide 351A, supplied as a 75% solids by weigt solution in n-butanol. Special features of tis pre-adducted polyamide include; good epoxy resin compatibility witout induction; excellent adesion and cure under adverse conditions. 2 SUPPLEMENTARY DATA Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent is low viscosity, solvent based polyamide adduct, supplied at 75% solids in n-butanol. Te product is intended for use wit a variety of epoxy resin types in te development of ig performance, corrosion resistant coatings for te protection of steel and concrete. Wen used wit a semi solid epoxy resin (EEW ), Ancamide 702- B75 curing agent offers fast lacquer dry, rapid mecanical property development, good adesion to te steel substrate and excellent long-term umidity and corrosion resistance. In addition, Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent exibits excellent compatibility wit liquid epoxy resins and terefore ig solid, solvent based coatings can be formulated using tis product, wic can ten be used for a wide variety of industrial maintenance and marine applications. Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent as a teoretical loading wit standard bispenol A diglycidyl eter resin of 90 pr, owever, for optimum performance it is recommended tat te Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent is used at or below stoiciometry. Were good corrosion and umidity resistance are required, it is recommended to use less tan te stoiciometric ratio and to use te curing agent in te pr range, wit an epoxy resin EEW of 190. Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent, like oter polyamide curing agents, is igly soluble in polar solvents suc as n-butanol, glycol eters and ketones. Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent does, owever, exibit lower solubility in aromatic solvents, suc as Xylene, terefore it is important wen developing coating formulations to maintain a suitable balance of polar and non-polar solvents. Tis is particularly important because as pot life progresses and molecular weigt increases, stronger solvents may be needed to maintain good solubility of te polyamide-epoxy resin polymer. Te addition of benzyl alcool or propylene glycol penyl eter (PP) can also be beneficial, in tat tese materials will improve te initial compatibility of Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent wit epoxy resin, minimizing any induction time. Formulations based on Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent can also be accelerated to enance dry speed bot at ambient at low temperature, using Ancamine K54 (penolic, tertiary amine accelerator). Levels can be varied to acieve te desired dry speed properties, wit te preferred level in te % range based on Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent loading. STARTING POINT FORMULATIONS Appendix 1 contains preliminary starting point formulations based on Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent for a series of anticorrosive primers and top coats. Wen pigmented, Ancamide 702-B75 coatings exibit a fast lacquer dry, as measured using te finger dry to touc metod, were coatings are dry to touc in less tan 2. Using te Beck Koller metod, dryard times range from 2-3 rs depending upon te system tested, wen applied and cured at 23 C. As wit all solvent based coatings, dry times are influenced by solvent coice, so dry times may vary depending upon te ratio of polar and nonpolar solvents incorporated into te coating formulation. Pot life as measured by te time for te mix to double in viscosity corresponds to 3rs for a formulated coating based on liquid epoxy resin and 5rs for a coating formulated wit a semi-solid epoxy resin, tese are typical for tis type of polyamide system. Formulation A702-B75P1 is a medium volume solids (62%), anti-corrosive primer, based on liquid bispenol A diglycidyl eter (EEW 190). Te formulation as a 2:1 mix ratio by volume, based on epoxy resin to amine ardener. Te initial viscosity of te formulated resin base is 3,000mPa.s and te mix viscosity of te system is 1000mPa.s wit a total VOC of 320g/l. Te primer formulation is compatible wit a variety of different let down solvents (including xylene, n-butanol, MIBK, metoxy-propanol, etc) and can be furter let down if required for additional spray applications. Te coating formulation can be applied wit conventional spray equipment or brus applied to te steel substrate and as a pot life of 3. Formulation A702-B75P2 is a medium volume solids (55%), anticorrosive primer, based on a semi-solid, bispenol A diglycidyl eter mixture (EEW 375). Te formulation as a 3:1 mix ratio by volume, and a VOC of 380g/l. Te coating formulation can be applied wit conventional spray equipment or brus applied to te steel substrate and as a pot life of 4. After application te primer is tack free after 1 and dry to andle after 3, following cure at 23 C. Formulation A702-B75P3 is a low volume solids (48%), anticorrosive primer, based on a modified solid bispenol A diglycidyl eter (EEW 525). Te formulation as a 4:1 mix ratio by volume, and a VOC of 485g/l. Te coating formulation can be applied wit conventional spray equipment or brus applied to te steel substrate and as a pot life of 6. After application te primer is tack free after 1 and dry to andle after 3 following cure at 23 C. Formulation A702-B75W1 is a medium volume solids (57%), medium PVC (29%) wite top coat based on a modified solid epoxy resin (EEW 525). Tis formulation demonstrates te utility of te Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent for use as eiter a tie coat or a top coat for primer systems. Te above formulations ave as been evaluated for corrosion resistance properties using salt spray, umidity and proesion resistance accelerated weater tests. After 1000 exposure, coatings exibit excellent corrosion resistance. Te primer system based on te solid epoxy resin was also tested after overcoating wit te wite topcoat. 3 resistance. For comparative purposes, Ancamide 700-B75 curing agent was also included in te test study as te industry standard reference. In all te corrosion resistance tests carried out, bot Ancamide 702-B75 and Ancamide 700- B75 curing agents demonstrated comparable performance. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION All coatings were evaluated in 5% salt spray, and in continuous umidity at 35 C. Tey were also evaluated using a proesion - cyclic weatering tester, and Cleveland constant umidity exposure, following a 10 day ambient cure of applied coatings. In addition te two coat system (A702-B75P3 overcoated wit A702-B75W1) was assessed for 1000 corrosion resistance following immersion in a 3.5% NaCl salt solution Primer coatings were applied to grit blasted, ot rolled steel (SA2.5), using conventional spray equipment, in double coats to give coatings wit a µ dry film tickness (DFT). Were multi-coat systems were tested, te primer was over coated wit a wite enamel via spray application in order to acieve a total dry film tickness of approximately 200µ. In salt spray, (ASTM B-117) panels were scribed and evaluated for field blisters using te US Federal Standard Test Metod 141a, Metod 6461 and te scribe creep was rated in accordance wit ASTM D Similar evaluations were made for panels placed in te proesion cabinet (ASTM G85-94). Panels exposed to umidity and salt solution immersion, were also scribed and coatings were also assessed for scribe damage, blistering and for canges in visual appearance. CORROSION RESISTANCE Anti-corrosion resistant primers based on Ancamide 702-B75 and Ancamide 700-B75 curing agents, were evaluated for salt spray, salt water immersion and constant umidity resistance. Te results obtained are presented in Table 2-4. General andling properties of te formulated coatings are comparable to Ancamide 700-B75 curing agent and coatings can easily be applied using a range of application metods suc as brus, roller and spray application. In accelerated weater testing, corrosion resistance indicates tat Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent delivers te ig level of corrosion resistance typically observed for tis class of polyamide adduct. Resistance up to 1000 resistance was easily acieved for all systems tested wit no noticeable damage around te scribe during tis period. Primer panels after 1500 exposure did demonstrate some minor scribe damage and panels also began to sow te early development of field blistering, owever, te results obtained wit Ancamide 702- B75 curing agent were comparable to tose obtained wit te standard reference, Ancamide 700-B75 curing agent. Te test data sows tat multi-coat systems, based on te Ancamide 702-B75 curing agent, also deliver excellent protection. Primer panels over coated wit a wite Titanium dioxide based enamel, sowed no signs of damage following 1000 accelerated salt spray exposure.
