21 Decision criteria? The idea is to provide a cheaper and easier alternative for people who need standard functionalities. The Linux Desktop will also help PSA to maintain an optimal number of Microsoft licenses. Hardware can be kept longer. Old hardware can be used to provide an improved desktop experience. Having the same kernel and packages for different desktop purposes (Laptop, production line...). ISV ecosystem (certification, support, commitment, roadmaps). NO CHANGE TO THE EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE! 21

23 PSA Linux Desktop Project Project Phases Pre-pilot with 30 users to check the usability of the system, the integration and the stability of the solution Pilot with 300 users (exec only) Production (deployment in progress) planned in the coming years 6 months with a reduced team involved on site 23

24 Issues raised and fixed Samba Winbind has been modified and reviewed to be more robust regarding the mobile profile of the users and the PSA network size. Integration with the PSA in house deployment tool has been a challenge and has been addressed closely for the SP1 deployment. User adoption has been faster than expected therefore we needed to reset expectations. OpenOffice is today's challenge at PSA. MS format is used for compatibility reasons and fixes are sent on a regular basis. No more than 3 weeks are needed to resolve issues. 24

25 Figures Today : Two types of users : heavy mobile users and manufacturing line users (usage as screw drivers), All users have been migrated automatically to SP1 without any manual interaction (less than 20 minutes per desktop), Phase 2 has been launched to reach : > between end 2007 and beginning 2008 > (and + see below) end of 2008, SLED is part of the PSA CAP2010 project (cost reduction, quality improvement, international development, product innovation...). Tomorrow : extension to other projects (on top of the users first planned initially). 25

27 Lessons learned... Engage with the following approach 1. Categorize your users (standard office workers, power users, specific tasks users...) 2. Set a TCO for the desktop that includes the change management related topics and commit your Linux vendor to that TCO 3. Involve management by using it as a beta tester : technology is ripe for it 4. Aim high and make Linux a reward for the user more than a punishment 5. Pick the right vendor... 27

28 Conclusion Linux Desktop offerings have matured at a lightning speed - they can be integrated and deployed in a MSFT environment without overhead costs. Linux Desktop offerings now provide a compelling alternative to Vista and require a pilot approach that mainly adresses change management to foster their adoption. TCO of a mixed desktop environment is better as a direct result of a dual-vendor sourcing - IT is no different from the automotive industry... Don't oversell, users adoption will come naturally (PSA executives). 28
