11 GEORGIA S SUSTAINABILITY ACTIONS FOR TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS 1. Used solutions that have minimal ongoing support cost. Some examples are : Obtained free solutions from an OER source Sakai (LMS), Dspace (LOR) Obtained free solutions from a state that shares Colorado Growth model Obtained free solutions from foundations such as Ed-Fi Tool for creating Cohorts Obtained free solutions from vendors - Microsoft s Office 365 for Education Obtained free solutions from a state that is willing to provide it to your state in exchange for your states sharable solutions Digital content Lowers costs by 60 90% 2. Maintained a homogeneous platform for our infrastructure, operating system, databases and middleware. Built in MS reporting services, used CEDS as our data standard. Lowers costs exponentially. 3. Developed an in house staff of state employees to support our technology solutions. Using contractors for long term support will cost 25-75% more than state staff STATS-DC: Frameworks for Sustainability 11

12 GEORGIA S SUSTAINABILITY ACTIONS FOR TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS 4. Leveraged existing DOE resources (Georgia Virtual School) for content. Legislators appreciate being able to pay for something once that gets used for multiple purposes. 5. Leverage existing state resources. Georgia is switching to the state owned university network which will increase our districts access to more bandwidth and data center services at lower costs. Procurement and contracts are also much easier to execute. 6. We leveraged a user community (GASIS) to takes ownership of the state systems so that when we sustainability funds, there was no question as to the value of the solution to the user community. 7. We built a cost model that shows how the department is staffed, what we support and what is in the backlog so users could make informed decisions on how to fund and prioritize our work STATS-DC: Frameworks for Sustainability 12
