1 Business Intelligence Analyst Role Description Edinburgh Napier University are looking for a Business Intelligence Analyst based within the Planning and Business Intelligence team. This is an exciting opportunity to deliver business intelligence in direct support of the achieving the University s strategic priorities and to contribute towards evidence-based strategic planning and decision-making. The role will take a key role in scoping, designing, developing and supporting Business Intelligence reporting solutions for use across the University for strategic and operational decision-making. The role requires a good level of technical understanding to bring together different sources of information from corporate systems and report in an insightful and visually engaging format. The role will require working with stakeholders to understand the reporting needs of colleagues across the University to develop innovative business intelligence solutions and visualisations of data. Harnessing different sources of internal corporate data and external datasets into the university s data assets, the role will be central to the strategic planning and performance monitoring activities of the University. Examples of projects include research and insight that shape the future academic portfolio of the University, performance monitoring, student surveys and student number planning and forecasting. The ideal candidate will have experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders that include Senior Management and business users that include academic and professional services staff. Excellent customer service and engagement is expected in order to deliver high-value reporting service. A strong understanding of the benefits of data driven decision-making coupled with problem solving and excellent communication skills are required for this role. Main Duties and Responsibilities The role will require working with stakeholders to understand the reporting needs of colleagues across the University to develop innovative business intelligence solutions and visualisations of data. Harnessing different sources of internal corporate data and external datasets, the role will be central to the strategic planning and performance monitoring activities of the University. You will provide insight to the internal performance and external environment. Working with a large number of stakeholders within the University that include Senior Management, Academic departments and Professional Services to deliver a high-quality reporting service. A strong disposition for data driven decision-making coupled with problem solving and excellent communication skills are required for this role. To design, implement and maintain corporate Business Intelligence solutions that meet the strategic decision-making needs of University stakeholders. Produce Business Intelligence reporting solutions and deliver reports that integrate complex multiple sources of information, taking into account data integration issues, data structures and data quality. In the context of the Higher Education data landscape, contribute to delivering an integrated and coherent approach to data analytics and reporting. Provide business analysis and leadership for data improvement and process improvement projects e.g. HESA Data Futures. Provide analysis and insight to Academic and Senior Management colleagues using internal and external datasets. To develop and support student planning and forecasting models using a range corporate data in specialist planning and forecasting software Support the submission of statutory statistical returns to HESA and Scottish Funding Council through the provision of high quality data and reports To develop a customer focussed reporting service. Provide a high level of customer service and engagement with stakeholders, including senior management, business users and data system owners. Provide expert advice, coaching and training for new and existing nontechnical users across the University on accessing and using management information To develop new and engaging visualisations of internal and external datasets, ensuring that non-technical users understand and use the data correctly for decision-making. To work alongside colleagues in Planning and Business Intelligence to identify and contribute to the development of management information reports for senior management and other stakeholders To provide support in the management and administration of the Business Intelligence software To perform any other duties, as requested by The Head of Planning, consistent with the role.
3 Person Specification Attributes Education/Qualifications Essential Selection Criteria A degree or equivalent Desirable Selection Criteria Relevant postgraduate or professional qualification Experience Experience of working with business intelligence tools such as Cognos, Tableau or Qlikview or a solid background using query tools such as SQL to extract data and create visually engaging reports such as dashboards or interactive reports. Experience of designing and developing business intelligence solutions from at least one data system with different data structures and data issues. Good working knowledge of using at least one Business Intelligence software package to design solutions Experience of managing and co-ordinating a number of different projects at once. Experience of providing Experience of developing planning and forecasting solutions using a planning software tool e.g. IBM Cognos, TM1 Experience of using IBM Cognos to develop business intelligence solutions and active reports Experience of working with a wide variety of stakeholders to collect requirements to develop solutions that meet customers needs. Experience of supporting nontechnical users to access, understand and use information from the Business Intelligence tool.

5 Skills/Personal Requirements Highly numerate & analytical with a good attention to detail. Good working knowledge of databases, good working knowledge of SQL and the ability to demonstrate a very strong grasp of the concepts of relational databases and data warehousing. Results oriented, strong sense of urgency, proactive and flexible. Ability to develop high quality working relationships with a range of stakeholders, including senior managers, IT staff and academic colleagues around the University. Knowledge of data and information needs of a University and how this feeds into the organisations planning and performance monitoring processes. Project Management qualification e.g. PRINCE2 Analytical and inquisitive mind-set and the ability to translate complex ideas for non-technical audiences. A strong understanding for data-driven decision making. Must display initiative and resilience, confident to work independently and as part of a team. Good written and verbal communication skills, especially to senior and nontechnical colleagues. Creativity in solving complex problems. Curiosity and eagerness to learn and develop new techniques.
