3 Compulsory Cash Drawers 3 Using Compulsory Cash Drawers Overview CounterPoint provides the capability to require that cash drawers be closed at the conclusion of each transaction. In order to use this capability, you must use a cash drawer that can report its open/closed status to the computer workstation. Some retailers prefer to require that cash drawers be closed at the conclusion of each transaction in order to reduce fraud and errors involving open cash drawers. CounterPoint provides this capability in a feature called "compulsory cash drawers". In order to use this capability, you must use a cash drawer that can report its open/closed status to the computer workstation. This reporting is usually accomplished by converting the cash drawer to a special cash-drawer-sensing port on a point-of-sale printer. The printer must be connected to the computer via a serial port and must be capable of informing the computer of the cash drawer's status when requested. For each drawer device code, you can specify whether the drawer must be closed before allowing ticket entry to continue. This feature is available only for cash drawers that provide a driver supporting compulsory closing (e.g, SureOne, TEC, etc.) If you are not using the Credit Cards Option, you must set the environment variable WINEDC=WINSTD in order to enable communications with compulsory cash drawers. Setting Up Compulsory Cash Drawers In order to use compulsory cash drawers, you must also define the following fields in Setup / Point of Sale / Device codes for each drawer that supports compulsory drawer closing. Compulsory close? Y / N Specify whether to use compulsory closing for this drawer Parameters This field appears if you answer Y to Compulsory close? <> If you are using a serial cash drawer without a device driver and are not setting the parameters externally using the appropriate SYNCOM environment variable, enter the parameters in the format BB,D,P,S where BB is the baud rate (3, 12, 24, 48, or 96), D is the number of data bits (7 or 8), P is the parity (E, O, or N), and S is the number of stop bits (0, 1, or 2). Enable Disable <> Enter the control codes (in hexadecimal format) that enable (or disable) the drawer For Preamble Postamble (Not applicable) displays if you answer N to Compulsory close? or if you specified a Query method of Character. <> Enter the control codes (in hexadecimal format) that should be transmitted to the device prior to (or following the actual data For Open warning delay <> Enter the number of seconds to wait before issuing a warning that the drawer is open When the drawer is opened, CounterPoint starts a timer. If the timer reaches the warning delay entered in this field and the drawer is open, a beep will sound every second until you close the drawer.

5 Compulsory Cash Drawers 5 Examples F2 override password <> Enter the password required to continue without closing the drawer For When the drawer is open in ticket entry, you are not allowed to continue until the drawer is closed. You can press F2 to override this requirement (i.e., turn off the warning beeps and continue without closing the drawer). If you enter a password in this field, that password will be required in order to use the F2 override. If you leave this field blank, anyone can use the F2 override. IBM SureOne (Drawer on COM3) The drawer COM port IRQ must be set to 4 in CMOS setup, otherwise you will receive a Communications time out error. 6 Compulsory Cash Drawers 6 TEC Cash Drawer To use the compulsory close feature with the TEC integrated Point-of-sale workstation, the TEC device driver DRAWDRV.EXE must be installed after installing CounterPoint. The device ID in CounterPoint must be entered as!drawdrv. The leading! is very important because it signals the serial routines to use file I/O instead of serial I/O to query the drawer. DRAWDRV.EXE is a product of TEC and is not included on the CounterPoint CD. Users should contact TEC or the CounterPoint Support Department to obtain a copy of DRAWDRV.EXE.
