Networks Services Centre Building Engineers Ireland Energy & Environment Division Tuesday March 9 th 2010 Maurice Scully Bord Gais Networks
Bord Gais Networks Sub-Sea & Cross Country Pipelines Bord Gáis Networks (BGN) develops, operates and maintains the natural gas transmission and distribution network in Ireland and provides gas transportation services to suppliers and shippers. BGN provide engineering knowledge and experience to the provision of the national services that fall within this remit e.g. pipeline development, renewals programme, Grid Control activities etc.
Networks Services Centre Building The Concept The Building The Innovation
he Concept Site Location Existing BGN Operation Proposed Metro West 2014 onward Dubber Cross Site
The Concept - Overview Following the move from John Rogerson Quay Bord Gais Networks were fragmented across Dublin. Staff and operations were housed in a number of locations and BGN also owned a site located at Dubber Cross, off St Margaret s Rd in Finglas. Issues surrounding the fragmented locations included: Limited synergy of operations associated with diverse locations Duplication of overhead and facilities costs Business exposed to increasing rental costs Inability to expand current locations Worsening traffic in Dublin resulting in increasing cost & lost time between sites The proposal was for BGN to amalgamate Dublin operations into a state of the art building in Dubber Cross, as part of its wider Networks Transformation Programme. The objective, to become a leading Asset Management & Customer Service organisation: This Networks Services Centre would have : 24/7 National Distribution Gas Control for Ireland 24/7 Emergency Response for Dublin and surrounding counties National Gas Training Centre National Distribution Safety & Quality Centre National Distribution Operations and Construction hubs
he Concept Campus Site Location
The Concept An Architectural Competition An architectural t competition with the RIAI (Royal Institute t of Architects t of Ireland) was held to design a low carbon, sustainable building in Finglas, to house the Bord Gáis Networks staff based in Dublin. The design of the building must incorporate leading energy efficient measures in terms of lighting, space heating and cooling to reflect Bord Gáis commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. The new building size will be approximately 5,000m 2 and be flexible to incorporate the future organisational needs and environmental objectives of Bord Gais Networks to the design budget. 56 conceptual design entries were received for Stage One of the competition and a panel of judges assessed the designs with regard to suitability and energy efficiency of the building, experience of design team and price. The panel consisted of: John Barry (Chair BGÉ), MD Bord Gais Networks John Cussen (BGÉ) Kevin O Rourke (Head of Built Environment, SEI) Niall McCullough (Partner, McCullough Mulvin Architects) Louise Cotter (Partner, Carr Cotter & Naessens Architects) Eight designs were chosen to progress to Stage Two of the competition, which entailed providing more detailed designs for assessment. The final panel assessment was held on 19th September 2008 and the winning entrant was selected.
The Concept - Winning Entry Denis Byrne Architects Local Irish Architectural Practice. Building concept derived from Celtic ring fort concept. Scored highest in Sustainability of all designs by SEI judge. Met the needs of functionality, space and design cost guide. Viewed by the Architects as a nice building to work in.
