4 REMOTE PROJECT EXPERIENCE Warramboo Bridge & Tunnel Project : : MESA A Mine, Pannawonica, Western Australia Rio Tinto Iron Ore : : Construction of a new 3 span bridge and separate arch structure SRG were contracted to undertake the construction of a new bridge and concrete arch structure on the North West Coastal Highway at the Mesa A Mine Site, which is situated approximately 1,140km north of Perth in Western Australia. Mobilising to this remote site required a great deal of organisation to ensure the works could commence on time. SRG s experience in this field ensured the mobilisation was completed smoothly. Extra support from head office was utilised during the initial stages to ensure the project commenced as planned. Detailed and realistic programming of the works was essential for the success of this project. Personnel from Perth and Sydney were utilised on a FIFO basis. The process to get personnel inducted and mobilised to site took approximately three weeks due to inductions, training, VOC s etc. Managing a FIFO project in a mine site environment is extremely demanding. Safety is always the number one priority for SRG. Site based inspections, Take Five s and a strong focus on the pre-starts and tool box talks, were all paramount on this site. Numerous local suppliers were utilised from nearby Karratha for this project including personnel for scaffolding, specialist cutting and also crane hire. 4

5 Wellington Dam Strengthening Works : : : : Collie, Western Australia Water Corporation of Western Australia Design, Spillway Bridge Construction, Roadworks, Drilling, Fabricate and Install Permanent Ground Anchors, Gallery Drainage Works Wellington Dam is located approximately 200kms south of Perth. SRG formed part of the Wellington Dam Alliance and completed the remedial works on this project to strengthen the existing concrete gravity structure with high capacity ground anchors. The anchors were up to 91 strands and equal the current world record capacity of 25,389kN (2,588t) breaking load. To accommodate access for long term monitoring an access bridge was constructed across the crest of the dam. The Alliance was nominated for a Worksafe Safety Award for the engineering of a strand cutting module. A strong focus was placed on the site inductions and the philosophy of working above the line in relation to the hierarchy of control. Site works were carried out from January 2009 until June SRG s experienced team of Project Managers, Site Engineers, Superintendent and Leading Hands were all relocated to nearby Bunbury. SRG utilised some of their experienced labourers but also sourced local labour from nearby Bunbury to work on the project. Numerous local suppliers were also utilised for the project. 5

6 REMOTE PROJECT EXPERIENCE Catagunya Dam Restoration : : Central Tasmania Hydro Tasmania : : Manufacture and installation of the world s highest capacity ground anchors, with breaking loads exceeding 25,389kN (2,588t) Catagunya Dam is owned and operated by Hydro Tasmania and is located in central Tasmania, approximately 100 km s northwest from Hobart. The works incorporated 92 No. 91 strand vertical anchors up to 77.8m long, embedded up to 30m into hard dolerite rock below the dam. The 53 spillway anchors are located 8.5m below the crest on the 56 degree slope and the remaining 39 in the abutments. The anchoring works commenced in January 2009 and were completed in June SRG s experienced team of Project Managers, Site Engineers, Superintendent and Leading Hands were all relocated to New Norfolk, over an hours drive from site. SRG utilised some of their experienced labourers as well as locally sourced labour from the surrounding areas to work on the project. Numerous local suppliers were utilised for the project. The Catagunya site team aimed to raise the bar from the high standard they had set at the previous dam project. The Catagunya team focused on the areas of skills and training of personnel. Training was conducted during toolbox talks at regular intervals on site for all employees, covering each aspect of the project from mobilisation, fabrication, installation, stressing, grouting, demobilisation and first aid. The site team also created a safe system of racking inside the shipping containers, ensuring that each piece of equipment was secured and could not move during transportation. This reduced the hazard of equipment damage and streamlined the mobilisation process, as each item was easily removed without the risk of injuries to employees. 6

7 TINAROO FALLS DAM : : Tinaroo, Queensland SunWater Limited : : Design, manufacture and installatin of permanent ground anchors. Construction of a 70m long bridge access system over the spillway. Concrete coring and insitu concrete construction works for the anchor head blocks and pits. SRG were contracted to undertake the strengthening of the Tinaroo Falls Dam by anchoring the existing concrete gravity structure into the foundation bedrock using BBR VT CONA CMG technology. Tinaroo Falls Dam is owned and operated by SunWater Limited and is located in far north Queensland on the Baron River, approximately 1 hour drive inland from Cairns. SRG s experience and organisation ensured mobilisation was completed smoothly and works could commence on time. Detailed and realistic programming of the works was essential for the success of this project. In a first for SRG, at the request of the client, SRG tendered and was awarded the role of main contractor for the project. In addition to the anchoring works the scope included the provision of a bridge access system over the spillway, concrete coring and insitu concrete works for the 1,250mm diameter anchor head blocks and pits, and drilling works for the anchors. The project was successfully completed in 2010, with the SRG and SunWater team extremely satisfied with the project and the safety, budget and programme goals all being achieved. 7

8 REMOTE PROJECT EXPERIENCE Capel River Bridge : Capel, Western Australia : Main Roads Western Australia : : Construction of a new bridge over the Capel River SRG were contracted to fully construct a new bridge over the Capel River. The 6 span, 72m long Mallokup Road bridge is located approximately 200km s south of Perth and spans over the Capel River. Separate office, storage containers and amenities were set up within a compound close to the site for the project team and subcontractors. The project commenced in November 2007 and was completed in June SRG utilised some of their experienced labourers and also sourced local labour from the surrounding areas to work on the project. Local suppliers for backfill, rock pitching and concrete were also utilised for the project. The specialist piling equipment and machinery was mobilised from Perth to site and set up in approximately three days ready for the commencement of piling works. 8

9 Prill Tower Heavy Lift : Moranbah, Queensland : Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific : 2011 : Heavy Lifting of a 160 tonne Prill Skirt, 70m high SRG were engaged to provide heavy lifting services for the erection of a Prilling Skirt as part of the construction of a new ammonium nitrate plant. The new plant is part of an expansion program by asset owner Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific and is located in Moranbah Queensland, which is inland between Rockhampton and Mackay in northern Queensland. The project s construction team, an Alliance Joint Venture between United Group Ltd, Bilfinger Berger Services and BGC Contracting, planned the construction of the tower and skirt utilising the SRG s strand lifting technology. The complex lifting and Prill Skirt assembly process was completed over a period of approximately four months and deemed a highly successful operation, with the project s Construction Superintendent Mr John Roberts commenting I want to thank you (SRG) for your help and input with the planning of the Prill Skirt assembly into the Prill Tower. This was a very complex and critical part of our project. It was essential that the erection of the skirt was completed without delays, with no safety concerns and that the 160 tonnes of suspended material was fully controlled at all times, with a large safety factor allowed for on all the lifting and lowering procedures.... it has been a very successful operation for the project and we will use SRG again in future when the need arises. 9

10 REMOTE PROJECT EXPERIENCE Roseires Dam Heightening Project : : : 2012 : Ad Damazin, Republic of Sudan Republic of Sudan Dams Implementation Unit Manufacture, transport, install, grout, stress, monitor and cap 5506, 1206 and 806 permanent anchors Roseires Dam is in the Republic of Sudan, in the Blue Nile State on the Blue Nile River, near the town of Ad Damazin, 550km south east of Khartoum, seven hours by car. The upgrade heightened the dam by 10 metres which stretches the embankments by a total of 11.6km. On completion the dam capacity has increased from 3.0 billion cubic metres to 7.40 billion cubic metres. SRG were subcontracted by a Chinese Joint Venture, CCMDJV, to supply and install the dam anchors for the project. With the dam height raised from 68 to 78 metres and the spillway buttress widened, anchors were installed to strengthen the dam so that it can cope with the additional load due to increased dam capacity. SRG mobilised their project team as well as all equipment required to perform the works within one month. The crew was made up of Project Management, Engineers and Supervisors from the Australian operations, post-tensioning technicians from SRG s Middle East branch as well as local Sudanese labourers. Undaunted by the remoteness and political instability, the site team worked an eight week on, two week off roster over seven months in a testing environment to deliver another successful project for SRG. 10

11 Pilbara Bridges : : : : Pilbara, Western Australia Main Roads Western Australia Bridge strengthening; concrete deck overlay (250mm), new approach slabs, expansion joints, guardrail and earthworks to tie the existing road surface in with the raised bridge level. SRG were contracted to strengthen four bridges (Beebingarra, Petemarer, Tabba Tabba and Pardoo Creeks) on the Great Northern Highway, up to 110km north of Port Hedland. The nine month project commenced in July 2013 and was completed one month ahead of schedule. The bridges range from 64.5m to 102m in length and are approximately 40 years old. The bridges were showing signs of fatigue cracking and failed approach slabs due to the high proportion of road trains and oversized loads using the bridges. They were completed one-half at a time to allow the traffic to continue to travel on the major highway during the construction period. Challenges faced included the management of the heavy/oversized traffic on site, tropical cyclones, availability and management of subcontractors in a remote location, significant concrete logistical challenges (large deck pours were poured at night with large travel times) and an over friendly local fly population. 11

12 REMOTE PROJECT EXPERIENCE Mid-West Bridge : : : 2013 : Mid West Region Western Australia Main Roads Western Australia Bridge refurbishment, new abutments, approach slabs and guardrail replacement SRG were engaged by Main Roads Western Australia to refurbish four bridges for safety and maintenance cost reasons. These were located in close proximity to the townships of Geraldton, Coorow and Eneabba in the Mid West region. installed in halves, with a temporary steel safety barrier used to provide protection to the public and workers on site. The existing guardrail was upgraded and significantly extended with X Tension 350 end terminals installed to provide impact protection to the public. Abutment extensions were added to accommodate the new approach slabs. These were installed to ensure a smooth transition onto the bridges and to save significant costs in maintaining these approaches. The two bridges near Eneabba were located on the busy Northwest Coastal Highway (NWCH) and had to be 12

13 Onslow Water Tanks : : : : Onslow, Western Australia Water Corporation Western Australia Design and construction of two 5 mega litre water storage tanks. SRG were engaged by the Water Corporation of WA for the design and construction of two 5 mega litre water storage tanks as part of the Onslow town water scheme. This project included the full management of the design and design review process including managing all consultants. SRG were also responsible for all site earthworks including temporary and permanent roads, sourcing, placing and compacting 12,000m 3 of select fill and placement and subsequent removal of 30,000m 3 of material for preloading to achieve compaction.
