1 Cost Comparison of Load In/Out Techniques Summary This paper compares a number of traditional load in/out techniques against a single LoadFast advanced rolling platform and Beam Hoist It considers the practical process issues and compares them according to elapsed process time along with the associated costs for the various loading methods. The effects of the following are taken into account:- Once off costs o Design time o Temporary works including scaffolding o Removal of temporary works o Installation and removal Ongoing costs o Rental o Movement costs whether by Tower Crane or Beam Hoist o Loading times o Manning The comparisons made are to traditional:- Scaffold (Alimak) Hoists Buck Hoist Material Hoists Scaffold Platform The results may be tabulated as follows :- Per 40 hour week Load out time for 1000 loads - weeks Platform/beam hoist Alimak Buck Hoist Scaffold Platform % Savings Number of Loads Alimak Buck Hoist Scaffold Platform 50 11% 10% -11% % 50% 20% % 63% 35% % 72% 47% % 80% 59% Copyright LoadFast Systems 2012 Page 1
2 Cost Saving Number Of Loads Alimak Buck Hoist Scaffold Platform 50 $ -2, $ -2, $ -6, $ 15, $ 15, $ $ 37, $ 37, $ 7, $ 81, $ 81, $ 24, $ 435, $ 434, $ 154, The analysis assumes a fixed 17 week hire period for all types of systems. With the capability of a greater number of load outs/week it is possible to reduce the load in/out time further, creating additional cost savings for the LoadFast range of products. This additional cost saving is seen on reduction of rental costs, on site costs, and cost savings by reaching project milestones earlier. These have not been included in these calculations due to differences between sites. The following overall conclusions may be seen By using a LoadFast combination system, reductions in cost of up to 78 % can be achieved, together with load out times reduced by 85 % Whilst the savings over a scaffold platform are smaller, there are still substantial gains to be achieved if there are any relocations required, or a platform / hoist combination is used In all cases if the load in/out point needs to be relocated, a LoadFast system is always more cost and time effective. 3 Initial Comparison The features are compared in the table below. The process steps for their use may be described as follows : LoadFast Platform and Hoist Check loadings and structure for access positions Design and manufacture any special steelwork for mounting purposes Transport LoadFast system to site and erect using tower/mobile crane Material loading process; (up to 5 ton can be loaded with each lift) o Load arrives on site o Lift load off lorry by Beam Hoist and into rolling platform in one operation o Move load from rolling platform to work area At end of project, remove LoadFast system components and any special steelwork directly to transport Alimak scaffold hoists. Design and check loadings for each access position. A new position means a new design process. Design constraints mean the Max load of hoist is typically less than 2 ton and the gate opening is a maximum of ~2m leading to the requirement to break down full loads into 2 or 3 sub-loads Erect scaffolding and hoist (typically called Alimak) Loading process o Load arrives on site o Lift load off lorry by tower crane or fork lift, into a compound. (it is rare that the lorry can get direct to Alimak hoist ) o Break down loads into part loads o Transport to Alimak o Lift into appropriate floor into building o Move load from Alimak to work area Remove Hoist and Scaffold Make good fixing points Buck Hoist Design and check loadings for each access position. A new position means a new design process. Design constraints mean the Max load of the climber is typically less than 2 ton requiring a break down of full loads into 2 or 3 sub-loads. Dimensional constraints also apply here. Erect any scaffolding and mast climber Loading process Copyright LoadFast Systems 2012 Page 3
4 o Load arrives on site o Lift load off lorry by tower crane or fork lift, into a compound. (it is rare that the lorry can get direct to climber) o Break down loads into part loads o Transport to climber o Lift into appropriate floor into building o Move load from climber to work area Remove climber and any scaffold Make good fixing points Other process constraints On city sites space is a premium and generally there is no intermediate storage for pallets, broken down loads etc The larger loads, such as bathroom pods cannot be broken down into smaller loads so can only be loaded via a scaffold platform or loading platform Scaffold hoists and Mast Climber lifts go up very slowly at approx one quarter the speed of a tower crane., adding more time to the process Climbers / Hoists are multi use, often used simply to transport personnel and hence time availability for material movement is constrained Copyright LoadFast Systems 2012 Page 4
