1 100 SUNSET AVENUE 100 Sunset Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: Primary: Double/Duplex (non-contributing) DATE/PERIOD: 1965 Vernacular Site Description: This vernacular duplex is located along the southwest corner of the junction of Sunset and Jefferson Park Avenues and faces north. It has a typical setback from the street, similar to the other duplexes near it. The shared asphalt driveway is on the west side of the site, with a parking area for the duplex adjoining. The yard slopes down toward Sunset Avenue and has mature evergreens in the northeast corner of the site. Concrete walkways lead from the front steps to the parking area. There are no secondary resources on the property. Secondary Site Description: No secondary structures. Primary Site Description: This two-story, four-bay, gable-roofed, brick-veneered duplex is comprised of two, two-bay sections, each containing a door and window on the first floor and four windows on the second floor. The doors located in the center bays are each fronted by a concrete and brick stoop with a side staircase and a metal balustrade. The first floor windows are 8/8 wood sash, while the second-floor windows contain 6/6-sash, all with brick sills. Constructed in 1965, this building has a brick foundation and no basement windows. The asphalt-shingled, gable roof has triangular louvered vents in the gables. A plain wood frieze board runs under the eaves. On each side of the duplex is a bowed nine-light bay window. On the rear elevation, each unit contains an exterior door leading out to a concrete patio with a brick wall separating it from its neighbor. This duplex is similar in form and proportion to the duplexes at 102, 104, and 106 Sunset Avenue, but differs in detailing. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significant Statement: Constructed in 1965, this brick-veneered vernacular duplex was constructed outside the period of significance of the Fry s Spring Historic District, it is a non-contributing resource.
2 102 SUNSET AVENUE 102 Sunset Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: circa 1960 Colonial Revival Primary: Double/Duplex (contributing) Secondary: Shed (non-contributing) Site Description: The duplex is located on the south side of Sunset Avenue, facing north, with a typical setback from the street. The shared asphalt driveway is on the east side of the site, with a parking area for the duplex adjoining. There is a concrete path leading from the driveway to the two front porches on the front of the house. There is a mature tree on the west side of the house and a dogwood on the northeast side of the yard. The shed is located in the rear yard. Secondary Site Description: N/A Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1960, this is two-and-a-half-story, four-bay Colonial Revival-style duplex has one frame unit covered in aluminum siding and the other in stretcher bond brick. Each unit is comprised of two, two-bay sections, each containing a door and window on the first floor, four windows on the second floor, and two gabled dormers in the gable roof. The doors are located in the center bays and are each fronted by a concrete and brick stoop with a staircase and a metal balustrade. Stairs beneath the stoops lead down to a basement level. Both foundations are brickveneered. The doorway in the brick section has a Colonial Revival-style surround with fluted pilasters. The windows are 6/6 vinyl sash with louvered vinyl shutters, except for the dormer windows which are 1/1 sash. Square louvered attic vents are on each side of the duplex. The brick section contains brick sills and concrete jack arches over the windows, adding Colonial Revival-style detailing. Two light steel casement basement windows are on the side of the duplex. The side of each unit contains a polygonal bay window on each side. On the rear elevation, each unit contains an exterior sliding-glass door leading out to a concrete patio. This duplex is similar in form and proportion to 104 and 106 Sunset Avenue, but differs in detailing. Several trees are found in the front and rear yard. The shared asphalt driveway on the west side leads to a wooden carport at the rear of the lot. There is a small wooden shed on the east side of the driveway at the southern edge of the lot. Secondary Site Description: N/A Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1960, this four-bay, two-story, Colonial Revival-style brick-veneered (stretcher-bond brick) duplex has a gabled, asphalt shingle roof with rectangular louvered attic vents. Each unit is comprised of two, two-bay sections, each containing a door and window on the first floor, and four windows on the second floor. The central doors with their Colonial Revival-style wooden door surround are fronted by brick and concrete steps up to a stoop with wrought iron railings. Beneath them are steps down to the basement entrance. The basement windows are steel two-light casement, and the other windows on the main house are 1/1 vinyl sash. This duplex is similar to 102 and 106 Sunset Avenue in massing and proportion but differs in detailing. An aluminum awing covers the rear entrances and patios. Secondary Resource Description: A ca. 1980, two-car carport with a gabled roof, square wood posts, and wood lattice siding is located south of the duplex. Secondary Resource Description: A ca 1980, pre-fabricated, gable-roofed shed with T-111 siding and an asphalt shingle roof is located at the rear of the property. Significant Statement: This ca brick-veneered Colonial Revival-style duplex is a contributing resource in the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. It is one of nearly three identical duplexes on this block of Sunset Avenue, perhaps constructed by the same owner.
5 105 SUNSET AVENUE 105 Sunset Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: circa 1954 Colonial Revival Primary: Single Dwelling (contributing) Secondary: Garage (contributing) Secondary: Shed (contributing) Site Description: This house is located along the north side of Sunset Avenue, across its junction with Brunswick Road. A stone retaining wall runs along the front yard and metal and wood fencing along the side yards. The graveled driveway is located east of the house and leads to the garage and shed. The house is built into a sloping site and is a full basement level in the rear. Mature trees are located in the rear yard and mature planting are located along the front of the house. A concrete walk leads to the front door. Secondary Site Description: N/A Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1954, this one-and-a-half-story, frame Cape-Cod-style dwelling is comprised of a three-bay main block with an L-shaped one-story frame wing added to the south. The house rests on a parged concrete block foundation with 4-light steel basement windows visible along the side elevations. The exterior walls of the house are covered in vinyl siding and the gabled roof is clad in asphalt shingle. The six-over-six-sash wood windows have paneled shutters on the façade and are paired on the main block front. The main block also features two gabled dormers with 6/6-sash windows and an exterior brick chimney on the west end. The entrance door has a single-light transom, Colonial Revival-style door surround, and a concrete stoop with metal handrails. A secondary front door, painted red, is located on the front of the side wing and suggests the house may now be used as a duplex. Other architectural details include triangular attic vents in the east gable end, a rear shed-roofed dormer, a rear hip-roofed wing and side rear porch. Secondary Site Description: The one-story, one-bay, gable-end frame garage was constructed ca and is of concrete block. It has steel windows, an asphalt shingle roof, and Masonite siding in the gable ends. Secondary Resource Description: This one-story, one-bay, gable-roofed frame shed is covered in weatherboard siding and features an interior-end brick chimney. It appears to date to ca and therefore predates the main house. Architectural details include 2/2-wood sash windows, louvered wooden shutters, a parged foundation, asphalt shingle
6 roofing, and a one-bay front porch with turned posts and cushion capitals. Significant Statement: This house, constructed in 1954, is a representative example of a Cape Cod from of the Colonial Revival style, which was popular during this era. The one-story frame shed/cottage in the rear yard appears to date to ca and is perhaps associated with an earlier complex on or near this site. The property contributes to the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. According to the 1957 City Directory, the house was occupied by Ellwood A. Talley, a clerk at Midway Market, and his wife at that time.
7 106 SUNSET AVENUE 106 Sunset Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: Primary: Double/Duplex (contributing) DATE/PERIOD: circa 1960 Colonial Revival Site Description: The parcel is located on a corner lot at the junction of Sunset Avenue and Brunswick Road. The house faces north toward Sunset Avenue and is situated in the northeast corner of the lot with an average setback and a large back and side yard. The driveway on the western edge of the site is asphalt and is shared with the neighbors to the west. There are symmetrical pairs of evergreen trees on the west and east sides of the house in the front yard as well as other mature trees and several dogwoods. The yard slopes down toward Sunset Avenue from the house. There are no secondary resources. Secondary Site Description: No secondary structures. Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1960, this four-bay, two-story, Colonial Revival-style brick-veneered (stretcher-bond brick) duplex has a gabled asphalt shingle roof. Each unit is comprised of two, two-bay sections, each containing a door and window on the first floor, and four windows on the second floor. The unit on the east has two gabled dormers, a plain frieze, 6/6-sash vinyl windows, and a six-light transom. The unit to the west has glazed brick, concrete jack arches above the 1/1 vinyl sash windows and door, a brick belt course, a polygonal bay window with a standing seam metal hood, and a brick frieze course under the eaves. Both sides have louvered shutters and a concrete stoop with metal railing. The rear elevation has French doors that lead out to a concrete patio. This duplex is similar to 102, 100, and 104 Sunset Avenue in massing and proportion but differs in detailing. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significant Statement: This ca brick-veneered Colonial Revival-style duplex is a contributing resource in the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. It is one of nearly three identical duplexes on this block of Sunset Avenue, perhaps constructed by the same owner.
8 201 SUNSET AVENUE 201 Sunset Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: Primary: Single Dwelling (contributing) DATE/PERIOD: circa 1925 Craftsman Site Description: Located on the north side of Sunset Avenue near its junction with Brunswick Road, the house has a shallow setback and sits slightly above the grade of the road. The rear of the lot has a significant downward slope. A natural wood fence encloses the front yard. The west side of the property is lined by a stone retaining with a.graveled driveway. A brick pathway runs parallel to the driveway on its east side, and brick steps and a flagstone path lead from the driveway to the front door. Secondary Site Description: There are no secondary structures. Primary Resource Description: Constructed ca. 1925, this one-and-a-half-story, stuccoed, three-bay Craftsman- style dwelling rests on a split-level parged foundation. It has a gable-on-hip roof clad in asphalt shingles, with overhanging eaves, exposed rafter ends, and two central-interior chimneys, one parged and one brick. The front gable end has paired two-light attic windows and a denticulated cornice resting over its two-bay, integral, screened-in front porch front porch. A side-screened porch extends off the front-screened porch (on the west side of the house). The square wooden posts are battered. The house features 1/1-sash double-hung wood windows, two-light basement windows, a six-light wood paneled front door, and projecting bay window, and a shed dormer on the east side. A one-story, ultra-modern, stuccoed, shed roofed addition, with a balcony extends off the rear of the house. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significance Statement: This is an typical example of a mid-1920s Craftsman bungalow and it contributes to the district. It appears on the 1929 Sanborn Map.
9 203 SUNSET AVENUE 203 Sunset Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: Primary: Single Dwelling(contributing) DATE/PERIOD: circa 1930 Craftsman Site Description: Located on a sloping lot on the north side of Sunset Avenue, this house has an average setback, and is sited slightly below the grade of the road. The rear of the lot has a significant downward slope. A gravel driveway on the west side of the property slopes slightly downward as it approaches the house. Flagstone paths beginning at both the driveway and the road merge and lead toward the front door. Minimal young trees and shrubs landscape the yard. Secondary Site Description: No secondary structures. Primary Resource Description: Constructed ca. 1930, this stuccoed, one-story, four-bay, asymmetrical Craftsman-style dwelling rests on a split-level foundation. The house has a gabled roof with a large, two-bay, lower, front cross gable. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles, and has exposed rafter ends and decorative purlin ends in the overhanging eaves. The house contains 6/1-sash double hung windows as well as six- and single-light casement windows. The paired 6/1 window on the façade are topped by a segmental arch and the entrance door is in a recessed, segmentally-arched bay. Brick steps with iron railing lead up to the small entrance stoop. Other details include a central-interior stuccoed chimney, rectangular attic vents in the gable ends, bay windows off the north and west sides of the house, and a screened-in rear porch. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significance Statement: This is a typical example of a mid-1920s Craftsman bungalow and it contributes to the district. It does not appear on the 1929 Sanborn Map.
