3 Secretariat review/updating of MAB and WNBR documents for implementing MAP, present results at next ICC 31 May - 4 June 2010 Proposed revisions/updates to ICC Statutes and ICC Rules of Procedure and Statutes of the Advisory Committee presented Work to update Statutory Framework on WNBR and Guidelines for establishing MAB National Committees underway

4 Actions to implement the MAP that will address multi-targets Congo Basin Biosphere Reserve Bio- Carbon Forum, Brazzaville, Congo April 2010 International Congress on ESD mid- Decade Overview Japan, December 2008 International Congress for a mid-decade review of ESD and agenda-setting for Bonn, Germany, March-April 2009 Graduation Ceremony for the Students of the 5th Promotion (from 8 African countries) & Regional Workshop of ERAIFT (Kinshasa, RDC, Mai 2010);

5 Initiatives under development for meeting multiple MAP-targets Germany in strengthening transborder BRs and National Commissions/MAB National Committee relations in Africa France, Canada and West Africa co-operation for sharing experience and promoting global communications on BRs Vietnam and Australia cooperation to develop integrated systems approaches to test BRs as learning labs for SD Spain special support for cooperation with Latin America, Africa and Asia

6 Networks initiatives that will also facilitate multiple target oriented co-operation: Amazon region Sub-regional network established Rotating seminars in Ibero- American-region providing training on the implementation of MAP SUMAMAD project (Bolivia, Burkina Faso, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Jordan, Pakistan and Tunisia)

7 National level initiatives Spain - 40 million Euros plus matching funds from local governments and partners Canadian Government special allocation for biosphere reserves; In Germany 2009 as a national year of biosphere reserves Israel - a dryland Millennium Ecosystem Assessment follow up project using BRs Rwanda UNDAF supported revival of MAB and review of Volcans BR

8 Selected issues that needs to be addressed for effective MAPimplementation Communication strategy and clearing house mechanism Legal status of BRs examples from countries Canadian and French examples of Charters Further dialogue among partners for better communicating urban area and BR interactions Mission and vision MAB ecosystems work beyond WNBR
