Agenda ETI s Bioenergy programme Why gasification? Phase 1 Waste Gasification project Phase 2 Waste Gasification
ETI Bioenergy Programme objectives Bioenergy offers the potential to deliver negative emissions in to the future UK energy system Four critical questions: How much of the theoretical negative emissions could be realised through bioenergy deployment in the UK? What would be the best ways to use this bioenergy in the future UK energy system? What are the right combinations of feed stock, pre-processing, and conversion technologies? Availability / sustainability of UK biomass production The use of bioenergy in conjunction with CCS Interaction of bioenergy with the rest of the UK energy system Technology & infrastructure roll out across all sectors System-level assessment and demonstration Cost and performance improvements Are the right policy mechanisms in place and are there public acceptability issues that need addressing? Land Use Change - Value Chain support
Spatial density of Waste Arisings determines Scale of Technology for The UK City Town Village Rural Av Population 500,000 50,000 5, % UK Population. 34% 43% 21% 2% Waste kte/yr Number of plants ,544 4,544 UK Market currently skewed towards facilities with capacities > 200kte/yr Unaddressed market for around 10,000 units of smaller scale plants Project focus on facilities around 50 kte/yr (~5 MWe) exploitation at 5-20MWe
ETI Waste Gasification Phase 2 Project The ETI is about to start investing in the development of advanced gasification projects incorporating syngas clean enough to be used in engines and/or gas turbines. Construction is expected to start in Q This new multi-million investment builds on it s Phase 1 Waste Gasification Project launched in April 2012 in which three companies were asked to design an economically and commercially viable, efficient energy from waste gasification demonstrator plant.in the 5-20 MWe scale range Phase 1 Design study Integrated system (MRF engine) > 25% electrical efficiency* > 80% availability Phase 2 Build and operate Phase 3 Exploit technology The ETI chose to invest in gasification following a > 1million research programme and ~ 3m FEED Study Project Low carbon energy and landfill diversion (landfill tax) Potential to provide 4-6% UK electricity Significant opportunity for smaller / more local units Town scale; equivalent to between 50 and 200kt/year (5-20 MWe) * using the ETI s defined methodology which includes energy losses across a MRF
Phase 2 Waste Gasification Outcomes Funds made available for the building of future Waste Gasification Plants Provide industry confidence in the technology Provide a spring board for further technology advancements Review actual operating data and share its capabilities
