Carbon Storage Program Funding and Statistics Currently, over 100 Active R&D Projects, combined ~26% cost share DOE Budget (Million $) Fiscal Year Carbon Sequestration (Storage and Pre-combustion) Carbon Storage

Core Storage Research and Development Research Focused on Technical Challenges Geologic Storage Technologies and Simulation and Risk Assessment Research Pathways Wellbore (construction and materials) Mitigation (wells and natural pathways) Fluid flow/reservoir pressure/water mgmt Geochemical (effects on formation, brine and microbial communities) Geomechanical (impacts on seals/reservoirs, basin-scale coupled models and microseismic Risk Assessment (integrationmonitoring/operations) Geologic Storage, Simulation, and Risk Assessment (GSRA)

Core Storage Research and Development Research Focused on Technical Challenges Geologic Storage Technologies and Simulation and Risk Assessment Research Challenges Understanding geomechanical impacts of injection; induced seismicity Technologies to ensure wellbore integrity and assess/effectively seal potential release pathways Development of risk assessment strategies Predicting CO 2 plume and brine pressure front movement, stabilization and impacts Geologic Storage, Simulation, and Risk Assessment (GSRA)

Core Storage Research and Development Research Focused on Technical Challenges Monitoring Verification and Accounting (MVA) and Assessment Research Pathways Atmospheric Monitoring Near-Surface Monitoring Subsurface Monitoring Intelligent Monitoring Systems Monitoring, Verification, Accounting, and Assessment (MVA) Research Challenges Detecting and quantifying potential leakage from wellbores, faults, and other migration pathways at the surface and near-surface Mapping the CO 2 plume (saturation) and pressure front in the reservoir, and detecting leakage out of the reservoir, in various depositional environments Integrated tools and systems for improved, long term monitoring

Core Storage Research and Development Validating Technologies in RCSP Field Projects Montana State University - CO 2 concentrations measured with the field rugged, pulsed Differential Absorption LIDAR with a 3.5 km radius University of North Dakota - Autonomous seismic sensors and impulsive source Oklahoma State Skywalker X8 Platform undergoing field testing Excelis, Inc. - LIDAR concept Intelligent Optical Systems - Distributed intrinsic fiber optic sensors for direct detection of dissolved CO 2 LBNL - U-tube sampler

Carbon Storage Program Storage Infrastructure

Assess CO 2 storage resource across the nation (onshore and offshore) Storage Infrastructure Research Challenges Validating cost-effective monitoring and storage technologies for all storage types and depositional environments for industry and regulators (onshore and offshore) Development of human capital and education for future CCS mass deployment Non-technical issues associated with large volume projects, including regulations, public perception, and industry s role

Storage Infrastructure Assessing and Validating CO 2 Storage Resources Developing Standard Assessment Methodologies, populating National Carbon Sequestration Database and Geographic Information System (NATCARB) and publishing in the public domain regional resource estimates through a series of Atlases

Storage Infrastructure Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships Seven Regional Partnerships 400+ distinct organizations, 43 states, 4 Canadian Provinces Characterization Phase ( ) BIG SKY PCOR Search of potential storage locations and CO 2 sources Found potential for 100s of years of storage WESTCARB MGSC MRCSP Validation Phase ( ) SWP SECARB 19 field projects in saline formations, depleted oil, unmineable coal seams, and basalt Phase II Validation Projects: Completed 19 Field Project s injection ~1.2 MMT Saline Formations (3,000 to 60,000 MT) Oil and Gas Reservoirs (50 to 500,000 MT) Unmineable Coal (200 to 18,000 MT) Basalt Formation (1,000 MT) Development Phase ( ) 8 large-scale field projects Commercial-scale understanding and validation
