Small Hydro power in Uganda Current Projects and Future Prospects.(Focus on the Potential of Hydro Power in the Mount Elgon Region, Uganda)
Why Small Hydros The need to provide affordable power to remote communities. The need to provide clean and reliable power to remote areas where: Grid extension is not feasible in the short term High cost of T-Line extension Low consumer demand and density in rural areas Large Hydros require huge investment capital
Technically, Small hydros are: Less complex (in equipment sophistication and design) Less demanding/stringent in design specifications, O & M by not very highly qualified personnel Possibility of local fabrication of parts ( Mini, micro &pico)
Continued Less impacts on environment due to small structures Less depth of developmental studies Stimulate demand growth enabling future grid connection When grid connected, help improve system reliability and stability Possibility of community ownership
On going and just completed IPP Small Hydro Power Plant Projects in Uganda. No Project Name/Location IPP Discharge Qm 3 /s Power (MW) Comments 1 Bugoye Tronde 13 Commissioned Nyagak/West Nile WENERECO 3.4 Under Construction due for commissioning in Nov Isasha/Rukungiri Eco Power(U) Ltd 6.6 Construction is on going 4 Buseruka/Hoima Hydromax Ltd. 9 Civil works for power house, intake, tail race exit nearing completion. Electromechanical equipment delivery and installation in progress. 5 Kikagati/Isingiro Kikagati Power Ltd. 6 Mpanga/Kamwenge Africa EMS Mpanga Ltd. 7 Maziba 2.3 2x x A new project to replace an old 1 MW power plant that is now obsolete. 18 Civil works for power house, intake, tail race exit including 90m tunneling in advanced stages. T Line funded by MEMD - contract awarded Upgrading to MW Flow of Qd 4.11 m 3 /sec at 40% exceedance
Nyagak 1 MHPP County District Total number of HH River name Kween Nebbi 284,468 (1.2m people) Nyagak net Head m 60 Design flow Qd m 3 /s 3 P(el) kw 3500 Implementation cost UGX US$ Economic rate of return on total investment Financial rate of return on community contribution 12% 62% The 3.5 MW Nyakk 1 is due to be commissioned in November Feasibility Studies and design for Nyagak 2 & 3 with capacities of 5 and 2.5 MW respectively and located 3 and 7 Km further downstream on the same river is on going. The power generated ( ~ 11 MW) will supply consumers in the West Nile region through an isolated grid that is to be connected to the National grid. The MHPP will then play an important role in the system stability and reliability.
Small Hydro Power Potential in Uganda 1. Mount Elgon Region Potential MW. 2. Mount Ruwenzori. Region Potential > 100 MW 3. South West Uganda. Region Potential >75 MW 4. West Nile Region. Potential > 15 MW
Small and Micro Hydro Power Potential Sites in the Mount Elgon area Desk study using1: 50,000 scale or better Contour Map Identify potential rivers and sites. Visit identified sites, collect data and information Apply Screening Criteria on each potential site. Rank the potential sites to come up with best sites. Further investigate at Pre Feasibility or Feasibility Level.
Screened Sites (Micro and MW sites) 1. In red, Top 10 ranked Micro Hydro sites of up to 300kW. 2. In Blue Top 6 ranked Small Hydro sites > 1.5 MW
Assessment of the Technical attractiveness of a MHP project A MHP Site is more likely to be technically attractive if one or several of the following criteria are fulfilled. 1. Pressure or geodetic head is > 40m 2. Plant gradient (layout)>10% 3. Firm flow -dry season generation> est. demand 4.Technical difficulty 5. Distance to consumer center 6. Consumer density > 30 connections
