6 AQUEOUS CLEANING Aqueus cleaning is a prcess that uses a slutin f detergent in water. Detergents can be cmplex frmulatins cntaining a number f cmpnents, each f which has a functin but they generally fall int tw categries: Thse that chemically react with rganic cntaminants, cnverting them int water-sluble prducts Thse that emulsify the rganic cntaminant with water The chemistry f the detergent must be matched with the substrate and the cntaminants. Cleaning is usually carried ut at an elevated temperature t increase the rate f chemical reactin. It is further enhanced by mechanical actin, usually by spraying, either in air r under immersin; ultrasnic agitatin f the liquid; r mvement f the item within the liquid. It may be necessary t fllw the wash stage by ne r mre rinses in water, which may be purified. If dry cmpnents are required, it may be necessary t include a ht-air drying stage. HERMETICALLY SEALED CLEANING (UNDER VACUUM) Cleaning is carried ut in a single chamber enclsed machine prcess, using hydrcarbn slvents. These have a flashpint abve 55 C and include isparaffins and mdified alchls. These chemicals have excellent slvency and are used in specially designed, cmpletely sealed equipment, under vacuum, in rder t aid easy remval f the residual slvent, i.e. the drying prcess. 7 SLIDING LID SOLVENT CLEANING Using a slvent t clean cmpnent parts requires ultrasnic cleaning with filtratin, fllwed by vapur rinsing and freebard dry. This secnd tank is electrically heated t bil the slvent and the resulting vapur rinses the cmpnents disslving any cntaminant The cmpnent part mves t the chilled freebard zne, allwing the slvent t evaprate and return t the sump The cmpnent part emerges clean and cmpletely dry, ready fr handling It is a fast, effective methd fr cleaning simple cmpnents. BI-SOLVENT CLEANING Refer t diagram - (1) - (2) - (4) - (5) A bi-slvent cleaning prcess is a tw-part prcess using a heated dip tank t initially remve the majrity f the cntaminatin fllwed by the mn-slvent degreasing prcess. Often used with heavily cntaminated prducts. Parts are immersed in a separate tank first with a pre-cleaning agent.
