2 Study Highlights World demand for textile processing and finishing chemicals is forecast to increase 4.6 percent per annum to $17.3 billion in 2004, a significant recovery from the poor growth registered over the previous decade. Colorants and related dyeing and printing auxiliaries will remain the largest product segment. The fastest growth for textile chemicals overall will continue to be registered in the developing countries of Asia, Latin America, Africa and in Mexico, as much of the world's textile manufacture continues to move to these regions to reduce costs. Countries with the fastest growth in textile chemical demand include Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Turkey, India and Brazil as well as smaller producers in Asia, such as Bangledesh and Vietnam, and in other Latin American countries. Production of textile chemicals is highly fragmented worldwide, with no company accounting for more than ten percent of total demand. Industry leaders include Ciba, Clariant and DyStar (including BASF dyes), who together control nearly one-quarter of total sales. Freedonia Industry Study 2

6 Market Environment The Market Environment Section discusses key indicators that drive demand for textile chemicals, including demographic and production trends and Freedonia s uniquely developed macroeconomic indicators. MARKET ENVIRONMENT This information provides you with an understanding and an analysis of the climate in which the global textile chemical industry operates and helps you build your market strategy to sustain long-term growth. World Trade Overview Trade plays an important role in the global textile chemical industry, although its importance is diminishing somewhat as production capacity increases throughout the world, especially in developing countries. Other factors which tend to reduce the importance of trade include the increasing cost of transportation, the global presence of key textile chemical suppliers and the importance of technical support SAMPLE PAGE services. As textile production has increased throughout the world, suppliers to the textile industry have also begun expanding globally in order to remain in close proximity to their customers. Thus, globalization is occuring throughout the entire textile complex. For example, Mexico s strong growth in apparel production in recent years is prompting several leading fabric producers to relocate production facilities in the country. This is prompting chemical suppliers to also set up or expand operations in Mexico through either sales offices or production facilities. A similar trend occurred in Asia to an even higher degree, as now a significant portion of the world s dye manufacturing capacity is located there. However, trade remains quite important overall, especially in certain sectors such as dyes and specialty coatings and chemicals. Europe remains by far the leading producer and exporter of textile dyes and chemicals, led by the strong presence of Switzerland, Germany, France and United Kingdom, which are the homes to several of the world s leading suppliers. Other key producing nations include the United States, China, Japan, India, South Korea and Taiwan. However, the dominance of Western Europe in dye production has lessened as imports from the Asia/Pacific region increasingly penetrate world markets. As with the textile industry itself, dyes originating from the Asia/Pacific region have become more competitive due to the cost advantages (e.g., lower labor, production, raw material and environmental compliance costs) producers in the region enjoy. 7 Product & Market Overview This Section highlights the key issues that have affected the global textile chemical market over the past ten years and summarizes contributing growth factors. This information helps you: Focus your sales and marketing efforts on high growth areas. Propose new areas for development PRODUCT & MARKET OVERVIEW Auxiliaries Leveling agents, thickeners, defoamers, binders, preservatives, fixatives, and reducing and migrating agents are among the chemical auxiliaries used during the dyeing and printing of textiles to modify such properties as crockfastness, color yield, color penetration, print appearance, viscosity, runnabilitiy and washfastness. In addition to improving dye performance, auxiliaries are also important in helping textile mills meet environmental standards by lowering the amount of color and other troublesome chemicals left in wastewater after dyeing, reducing processing time and decreasing energy costs. Global demand for dye and print auxiliaries is projected to increase 6.5 percent SAMPLE PAGE per annum to $1.6 billion in 2004, aided by recovery in both textile production and dye usage as well as renewed interested in textile printing. Growth will be driven by the increasing use of more advanced, and more expensive, formulations that provide performance and environmental advantages. An increasingly stringent regulatory environment is also expected to boost demand for ecofriendly formulations free of undesirable chemicals, including urea, formaldehyde, salt and solvents. In addition, good growth opportunities exist for fixatives, which help to reduce the color content of effluent, with consequent savings in wastewater treatment and dye costs. Pigments have seen increased use in textile printing due to their ease of application on a variety of fabrics. Pigment printing requires use of auxiliaries different from those used with dyes. Typical auxiliaries include crosslinkers, such as melamine resins, to improve washfastness; rheology modifiers, such as polycarboxylic acids or ethylene maleic anhydride copolymers, for a smooth print appearance; thickeners, such as polyacrylic acid or natural gums: and thinners, such as sodium sulfate. 8 Demand by Country & Region These Sections analyze demand trends for textile chemicals in 26 countries and six regions. Mexico - Chemical Demand NORTH AMERICA Demand for textile chemicals in Mexico will increase 7.7 percent annually to $485 SAMPLE PAGE million in 2004, driven by robust growth in the country s textile industry and increasing use of more specialized chemicals for fabric finishing applications. Mexico is one of the fastest-growing markets for textile chemicals worldwide and this trend will continue throughout the forecast period. Growth is being spurred by the effect of NAFTA, which promotes the use of North American material in textile production and allows easy movement of goods within the region. This is not only increasing ASIA/PACIFIC the movement of US textile producers to Mexico but has also increased investment by Asian and European firms. Demand growth will be further boosted by the increasing importance of fabric mills which are being built Japan - Suppliers in the country to supply Mexico s large apparel industry. Fabric production is one of the more chemical intensive processes, generally involving dyeing and Suppliers of dyes and other textile chemicals in Japan include BASF, Bayer, Ciba, finishing, among other operations. The growing importance of cotton in the Clariant, Dai-ichi Kogyo Seiyaku, DyStar, Matsumoto Yushi-Seiyaku, Nicca Mexican textile industry will also promote chemical demand, as natural materials Chemical, Nippon Kayaku, Novo Nordisk and Sumitomo, although there are generally require a higher level of chemical treatment than synthetics. numerous other participants, especially in the textile chemical sector. While the Mexican market will continue to be dominated by apparel applications, Japanese companies are leaders in the global market for dyes and organic NAFTA is increasing demand for higher quality products and is also expected to pigments, particularly in higher end, technologically driven products. Major increase production of home furnishings and other textile goods in the country, Japanese producers of dyes for the textile industry which Germany include Hodogaya should provide Textile Chemicals, an additional boost to Demand chemical consumption. Nevertheless, Nippon Kayaku and Sumitomo Chemical. However, domestic Mexico will lag behind (million dye producers its northern U.S. dollars) face neighbors in the production of high-tech increasing competition from the large European companies such as Ciba and fabrics and textile goods, which limits growth in certain coatings and specialty DyStar, who have manufacturing operations in Japan and other Asian locations. Textile mills have come to rely more on chemical suppliers for product development and problem-solving functions. Chemical suppliers must also be able to respond quickly to fashion trends. Methods of marketing and distribution vary, depending on the sector of the industry in which the company participates. For instance, large chemical producers and dyestuff manufacturers may sell directly to textile mills using their own sales staff or, SAMPLE PAGE alternatively, they may sell their products to textile chemical formulators or utilize the services of independent distributers. Most textile chemical formulators sell their products via in-house marketing and sales departments. Advances in information technology have begun to impact marketing, facilitating globalization and allowing customers and suppliers alike to streamline marketing. For example, BASF acquired a stake in the electronic-commerce group ChemConnect in February 2000 as part of the company s strategic initiative to purchase raw materials via the Internet. The move also allows BASF to become a member of ChemConnect s Technology Roundtable where the company will be able to assist in developing this form of trade. Furthermore, in May 2000, BASF implemented an e-business initiative with ECOutlook.com that will enable BASF to exchange information with the company s trading partners, track shipments using real-time and enhance its customer and supplier relationships. In other electronic-commerce activity, BASF, Bayer, Dow Chemical, DuPont, Mitsui Chemicals (Japan), Rhodia, Rohm and Haas, and Sumitomo Chemical announced in May 2000 the formation of an Internet marketplace, which is expected to be online by the end of the year The site will offer integrated solutions and services for buying and selling basic, intermediate, specialty and fine Copyright by The Freedonia Group, Inc.
