HAQT- Helsinki AQ Testbed Ari Karppinen; Athens 6/2017
HAQT The existing reference-level air quality monitoring network is supplemented by two types of commercial air quality instruments. The added value of these supporting and affordable air quality instruments, when used within an air-quality monitoring network, will be investigated using the ENFUSER modelling system. ENFUSER also offers diagnostics for the assessment and fine-tuning of the sensor network supplying the model.
Meteorological Data Regional AQ Forecasts FMI-ENFUSER Information fusion using open access and globally available datasets Hourly average NO2, PM2.5, PM10 and O3 Adapts to recent measured AQ data Can be calibrated and used without local emission inventories AQ measurements Emission Inventories (if available) GIS- Datasets 3 3
Operational modelling system For selected cities in Finland FMI-ENFUSER produces high resolution (15x15 m) AQ information - Includes AQ forecasts for the next hours - Model data accessible through a Web Portal Calibration update (1-4 times per year) Information extraction (every 10 minutes) FMI-ENFUSER (runs every 1-6h) Model output (figures, animations, gridded data, etc) Web Portal NO2, PM2.5, PM10, O3, AQI Amazon Web Service, HerokuApp, Dropbox 4
Demonstration in Asia A demonstration in Langfang, China, utilizing 5 installed PM2.5 sensors. Continues soon with more sensors (3x) and regional AQ model data being included. Also, ENFUSER will soon be demonstrated in Delhi, India as a part of CLIMOB project. Figure: A closer look at the hourly PM2.5 concentration in Langfang, given by FMI-ENFUSER visualization toolbox. An example of estimated PM2.5 concentration time series based on the sensor data in Langfang. The selected example location is just outside of Silver City Hotel, Langfang 5

Helsinki Metropolitan Air Quality Testbed Full-scale ground-breaking air quality monitoring architecture to Helsinki Metropolitan area to Improve the quality of life of citizens Create improved services for air quality foreasting, alerting and traffic and city design Create additional products and applications around Cleantech business area Conduct research related to globally known Finnish reaseach areas of atmospheric physics (HU) and air quality and urban meteorology (FMI), supported by Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) and industrial partners Vaisala and Pegasor
Testbed Partners Vaisala Vaisala AQT420 air quality sensors (appr. 15 pcs) to be installed around Helsinki Metropolitan area Measurements of NO 2, O 3, CO and SO 2 gases and PM2.5 and PM10 particulates Pegasor Pegasor AQ TM Urban sensors, (appr. 3 pcs) to be installed around Helsinki Metropolitan area Measurements of particulate mass and number, especially in nano size class Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority Data from Helsinki area regulatory air quality network: comparisons and verification against reference data Research related to Helsinki area air quality spatial and temporal variation Utilization of data for HSY public services Finnish Meteorological Institute ENFUSER air quality fusion model to study AQ network optimization and impact to model performance Comparisons and analyses with Cityzer-project Helsinki University Evaluation of current and beyond state-ofthe-art Kumpula observations and their potential as part of new AQ network. Research related to e.g. aerosol number size distribution, aerosol chemical composition and comprehensive trace gas characterization
Vaisala new air quality transmitters for supplementary air quality networks AQT410 AQT420 Measures NO 2, SO 2, CO and O 3 Measures NO 2, SO 2, CO and O 3 and also PM2.5 and PM10 Particulate Matter
Pollutant gas measurement One AQT400 device has 4 electrochemical sensors for different gases NO 2, SO 2, CO and O 3 gases available today Other gases (H 2 S, NO, VOC) to be configurable later NO 2 O 3 Effects of temperature, humidity and aging are compensated by advanced adaptive algorithms SO 2 CO Measurement performance of cost effective sensors is significantly improved thanks to the algorithms
Pollutant gas measurement with advanced algorithms Compensation of effects of ambient conditions allows the use a compact and light-weight sensor structure, without heavy covering box The sensor can be placed in open air and it can be easily mounted to various locations: on streets on pillars and walls of buildings industrial sites indoors on moving vehicles
Particulate Matter Measurement Laser Particle Counter Size distribution with optical granulometric measurement Measures 1 minute sample between 5-10 minutes 12 6/29/2017
Laser Particle Counter for PM2.5/PM10 Measures concentration and size distribution of >0.3 mm particles Each particle scatters light, the amount of scattered light is proportional to the size of the particle Algorithms are applied to calculate PM2.5 and PM10 taking into account ambient humidity
Summary We will test : new sensors (Vaisala, Pegasor, others?) fusion methodologies, sensor site optimisation algorithms Duration (planned) 3-years : 1st phase 1½ years Both research and practical/operative applications 1st version of operative AQ-forecast system based on AQT will be launched at the end of year (opeated by HSY) System will be continuosly devoleped during the 3 years -> assesment of the added value of the new low cost sensors
