Large scale storage options under special consideration of 6x15 MW battery example Prof. Dr. Wolfgang A. Benesch, STEAG Energy Services GmbH Christian Karalis, STEAG GmbH
Some key statements Electricity is loved but any kind of generation not Electricity is an energy easy to control, difficult to store but Flexibility is cheaper than storage In case of storage, different options are asked for Storages are part of the quite complex energy systems of the future future Considering complex systems no more the components are the most important items but the communication and interaction of the elements
Overview STEAG and the Energy Turnaround Storage necessity and types Implementation in STEAG Portfolio Current status of related STEAG activities Methanol Lünen Battery storage in different locations Sector coupling
Challenges of the Energy Turnaround are accepted by STEAG Renewable generation significant increase Conventional generation increase in flexibility Control power increase of control power for large power plants and decentralized generation Marketing of PC, SC and MC Generation Consumption Storage (e.g. battery power to x and so on) as an element for flexibility as part of the Energy Turnaround
Integration of renewables and conventional power generation at STEAG in the past Wind power Selected projects Ullersdorf, Brandenburg 43 MW Crucea, Romania 108 MW Süloglu, Turkey 66 MW total 346 MW Decentralized generation examples CHP Sömmerda (2 MW) Biomass BMK Lünen (20 MW) Mine Gas MHK Fenne (42 MW) Battery storage experience Lithium-Ion storage LESSY control power +/-1 MW, capacity 670 kwh Marketing activities Virtual power plant MC since 2003 (350 MW) SC since 2015 Optimized conventional power plants Reduced minimum load start up optimization Extended coal range District heating and CHP at Ruhr and Saar Connection of district heating network Ruhr and Rhine
Background Increasing renewables are asking for more storage capacities Renewables become more and more decentralized (wind in the north and PV in the south) new overhead lines are not favored, so also larger storage capacities are needed But it has to be differentiated between Long term mass storage (some) and Short term dynamic storage (many) Different technologies have to be considered and evaluated technically and economically
Storage systems Mass storage Conventional storage technologies have a lack of acceptance (like pump storage plants) Power to gas storages are reflecting on the same capacities for electricity, originally installed for natural gas - political uncertainty - Power to Methanol e.g. easy to be stored, useful in traffic and industry Dynamic storage Sektoral Link Flex20+ as an element of Designetz and SINTEG initiative Battery systems as highly dynamic tool Use of flexible conventional power plants as storage alternative

History LESSY (Lithium Ion-Electricity-Storage-System) experience in system support Supported by: System characteristics Primary power ± 1,0 MW Max. capacity ~ 700 kwh Technology Lithium-Ion Location Völklingen-Fenne (Germany)
Large battery systems can be used in different ways Provision of control power and or control capacity Supply of back up power Peak Shaving Black start of power plants Homogenization of fluctuating generation Control of grid voltage Increase of short cut current
Large battery systems Key project data Investment in large battery systems to provide 90 MW el PC in total Project costs in total: about 100Mio. No subsidies Erection at 6 STEAG sites in Germany using existing grid connections Containerized solution to have the option of relocation Fast realization Start of erection April 2016 Commercial operation of all units end of 2016
Large battery systems Technical data Main design data of the Large battery system at each site 10 all-in container each 1,5 MW 1 container for the control system Battery capacity > 120 MWh in total > 20 MWh at each site, thus fulfilling the rule for PC Provision of 30min. Dimensions of the containers Length: app. 12,8m Width: app. 2,6m Hight: app. 2,8m Weight: app. 45t
Large battery systems Requirements for PC Prequalification compulsory mandated (ÜNB) Weekly tendering from ÜNB about 780MW for the control area D-A-NL-CH Tendering period: 1 week Minimum marketable lot: ±1MW, furthermore 1MW steps 100% technical availability (back up is needed) Reimbursement of capacity; no commodity charge as with SC and MC minimum conditions for battery storage capacity 30 min., if they are not replaced by other equipment from a pool

Large battery system STEAG sites
The whole value chain out of one hand Large Storage Systems STEAG is prepared to offer full service Design, investment and commissioning Operation and maintenance Prequalification and marketing Energy trading and marketing with the support of the tool OneOpt
SINTEG Designetz subproject Sectoral Link Flex20+ Goal of the Designetz window as part of the SINTEG initiative from BMWi is to bridge the gap between individual solutions to an efficient energy system of the future with optimized market oriented use of grid- and system-flexibility As part of the subproject Sectoral Link Flex20+ (which means coupling of grids for electricity, heat and mine gas ) the focus will be on the following subjects: Development of measures, components and strategies to operate interconnected grids economical with high availability and efficiency Use of flexibility options independent from local energy generators Integration of two large demonstrators: Heat storage and electrical boiler Development of guidance and rules for future grid operation by intensive joint 24/7-testing of grid and demonstrators
Summary The energy transition process in Germany is heavily accelerating. The renewable share in electricity generation is growing fast. The Energy Turnaround asks for flexibility and storage options. Beside flexible conventional power stations answers of STEAG are: Power to methanol Large battery storage systems purely commercial project without subsidies Sectoral Link Flex20+ The first battery units had been connected successful to the grid. In Lünen, Herne and Weiher extended tests had been started to get the necessary certificates for PC from the grid operator Amprion. Commercial operation will start soon. STEAG Large battery systems will fulfill the current standards of PC and besides others the criteria of 30 min service provision. This ensures an important contribution ensuring the grid stability. With this investment of 100 Mio. in in total 90 MW Large battery systems STEAG plays an important role in making the Energy Turnaround reality
