2 Overview of Japan s Low Carbon Technology and Potentiality of Contribution Iron and Steel By applying the best practices of iron and steel plants from Japan, to other plants in the world, it is estimated that 13 million tons of CO2 can be reduced. Coal Power Generation By applying the best practice of coal fired power plants in Japan to that of the US, China and India, it is estimated that 1.3 billon tons of CO2 can be reduced. 11 Geothermal Power Generation NEDO s FS Projects on going(1) Conduct feasibility studies on geothermal power generation in Great Rift Valley. Project Area: Great Rift Valley(Ethiopia, Djibouti and Rwanda) Members :Deloitte, MHI, Marubeni Corp, MRI, Sumitomo Corp Electrification in Off grid Area (1) Conduct feasibility studies on renovating a hotel in an off grid area of Kenya. To replace diesel generators by utilizing renewable energies such as solar power, mini hydro power and wind power generation, and introduce energy saving devices in the facility. Project Area: Kenya Members: NTT Data Institute of Management Consulting FUJI ELECTRIC. Mpata International Electrification in Off grid Area(2) Conduct feasibility studies on electrification in off grid areas in Mozambique to replace existing diesel power generation systems, by introducing hybrid systems consisting of plant oil fired power generation systems (Jatropha oil) and solar power generation systems. Project Area: Mozambique Members: EX Research Institute, Okinawa Enetech, Nippon Biodiesel Fuel 11
12 NEDO s FS Projects on going(2) Energy Saving in Factories (Steel Sector) Conduct feasibility studies to identify applicable energy saving g technologies for the steel sector in South Africa. Project Area: South Africa Members: Nippon Steel and JP Steel Plantech Energy Saving in Factory (Car Production Sector) Conduct feasibility studies on introducing cogeneration in the painting process in an automobile factory, to generate both heat and electricity to replace gas based heat generating systems. Project Area: South Africa Member: Hitachi All projects develop methodologies for the measurement for GHG emission reduction in addition to their study area. 12
