13 Need for a Coastal Service Number of FP7 projects contributed and possibly improved Europe s monitoring capabilities for the coastal zone. Several FP7 R&D projects have been successfully achieved, such as AQUAMAR (ACRI-ST), COBIOS, ASIMUTH, etc (and the ESA GSE Marcoast project) and are paving the way towards operational monitoring services. Need for: A larger and recognised use of Earth Observation for environmental reporting A pan-european deployment of a coastal service allowing harmonisation across MS Optimisation of and best use of complementary observations means Need for a reliable monitoring tool of the ecological status of the coast and shoreline = COPERNICUS coastal Service 13

14 Most relevant FP7 (and ESA) projects as basement of COPERNICUS Coastal Service AquaMar ( , FP7) & MarCoast ( , ESA) projects on coastal water quality OSS2015 ( , EC FP7) Ocean Strategic Services beyond 2015 on bio-geo-chemistry products SAFI ( , EC FP7) Support For Aquaculture and Fisheries Industry PEGASO People for Ecosystem Based Governance in Assessing Sustainable Development of Ocean and Coast ( , EC FP7) 14

16 AquaMar & MarCoast MarCoast ESA project (GMES Service Element), Mainly dedicated to the provision of services, no R&D activities AquaMar FP7 European project, started in April 2010 More focussed on R&D Improvement of existing products Development of new products Less oriented towards services production In summary: AquaMar do R&D that is not done in MarCoast, MarCoast will integrate and deliver the new products developed by AquaMar Synergies between the 2 projects Almost the same partners (among which a lot of SME) Both use products provided by the «Marine Core Service» (MyOcean) 16

17 Project information Starting date: late 2005, continued with MarCoast2 (2 x 3 years) total cost: 11,5M (over 6 years) Consortium: TASF (leader), up to 45 sub-contractors during MC1, 16 partners during MC2: ACRI-ST, Brockmann Consult, Planetek, STARLAB,... MarCoast (Marine & Coastal Environmental Information Services) delivers satellite-based services in the field of marine and coastal applications. MarCoast is a GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) project funded by the European Space Agency. 17
