De Keukelaere, D. Doxaran, R. Forster, N. Greenwood, P. Jaccard, E. Knaeps, H. Lavigne, C. Lebreton, A. Ledang, S. Marty, G. Morin, B. Nechad, M. Norli, S. Novoa, A. Ody, T. Silva, K. Sorensen, K. Stelzer, D. Van der Zande, Q. Vanhellemont Presented at the Copernicus Workshop for coastal zone monitoring and management, Brussels, 29 June 2017 The HIGHROC project is funded by the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/ ) under grant agreement n This communication represents only the authors views. 2 Remote Sensing: What is ocean colour? [R. Mendes] Chaetoceros spp. Algal particles (phytoplankton) Non-Algal particles (suspended sediments) Suspended Particulate Matter MERIS 2003ave Chlorophyll a [J-P. Vogt]

3 Pre-HIGHROC OSPAR/EU-WFD Eutrophication monitoring product Water quality monitoring (EU Water Framework Directive) Belgian CHLa 90% Mar-Oct , WFD product [Processing: D. Vanderzande (RBINS), L2data: ACRI-ST] CHLa 90 percentile (MERIS,2005) OSPAR(2006): Spatially extensive Cross-boundary Neutral

4 HIGHROC High spatial and temporal resolution ocean colour products and services EU/FP7 funded: Consortium: RBINS, UPMC/LOV, NIVA, BC, VITO, CEFAS, UHULL + Users High temporal resolution MSG/SEVIRI 15mins HIGHROC Medium resolution Ocean Colour MERIS, MODIS Sentinel-3/OCLI 300m, 1day GMES Downstream Services e.g. MARCOAST High spatial resolution Sentinel-2, Landsat-8 HIGHROC 10m End-Users: EU Water + Marine Strategy Framework Directives New applications: Windfarms, dredging, etc.

5 Spatial resolution improvements Many coastal/inland apps are very nearshore: EU WFDirective 1 n. mile New sediment transport features become visible at high spatial resolution, e.g. Sentinel-2 10m (ports, estuaries, dredging plumes, windmill wakes,...) 5km Landsat-8 (30m 15m) around port of Zeebrugge Vanhellemont Q. & Ruddick K. (2014). Landsat-8 as a Precursor to Sentinel-2: Observations of Human Impacts in Coastal Waters. 12 CONCLUSIONS Satellites used for monitoring of Chlorophyll a (EU Water Framework Directive) and sediment transport Mature pre-highroc services based on MERIS/MODIS (~300m, 1/day) HIGHROC project has developed new products and services: High spatial resolution, ~10-30m (Sentinel-2, Landsat-7/8) High temporal resolution, ~15mins (METEOSAT Second Gen.)... and is busy validating and having these tested by Users BUT what happens after HIGHROC?
