5 Oman solar market opportunities 4 Oman is one of the highest potential market for the development of the solar sector for the following reasons: high solar irradiation (90 % of the country has a kwh/m2 global horizontal irradiation);; land availability;; need of reducing the dependence on oil & gas;; subsidized energy tariffs from fossil fuel production will decrease;; secure energetic market;; low risk to a robust legal framework in the country;; direction to identify ways to reduce its energy deficit through renewable energy;; need for decentralized energy distribution and energy on demand new trend;; low tax impact;; growing Energy demand.

6 Oman solar market opportunities 5 Short term period opportunities: regions and places powered by diesel generators where the grid is still not present (farms, mines, military checkpoints, telecommunication stations etc);; new middle class and luxury housing in construction phase which need a new concept of energetic efficient system (PV cooling, solar cooling, PV etc), crude oil producers which typically burns gas to produce the steam necessary to free up heavier oil. In medium-long term period, once the legal and technical framework is defined, the large scale installations will be ready to commence.

7 Oman distribution company subsidies energy 6 The energy price of 16 Bz/kWh (0,016 OMR/kWh) paid by industrial companies is applied from the distribution company thanks to the subsidies tariff. Distribution company subsidies the energy loosing from 50 Bz/kWh to 30 Bz/kWh plus the opportunity cost of selling oil or gas to foreign country. Production cost of electricity through large-scale solar energy systems can reach < 30 Bz/kWh (0.08 USD/kWh) allowing the Government to reduce subsidies and to increase revenues from selling of oil and gas.
