1 Country: Germany Place: Saerbeck Date: No. of participants: 6 Organizer: DBFZ Target group: raw material suppliers, pellet producers, equipment manufacturers, pellet and combustion plant operators Title Network meeting No. 3 in Germany - Integrated concept for the use of digestates in combustion plants < 500 kw - Topics of the event: Discussion of achieved results: o Emissions and ash characteristics from combustion tests with digestate pellets and pellets made of 50 % digestates and 50 % wood o Utilisation concepts including economics o Market research on combustion and precipitator technologies Discussion of further steps and finalisation of work Organisation of a workshop at the beginning of 2012 and publishing of the results Short summary: (aims and goals of the meeting, methods, contents, results) The third network meeting took place in Saerbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia. The two companies participating as regional key actors represent a large part of the biomass supply chain: o Andreas Schneider, Thomas Coban and Guido Pusch / Pusch AG: The Pusch AG provides a comprehensive concept for the decentralized production and combustion of mixed biomass pellets from agricultural and woody raw materials (license concept agrarstick ) o Jens Bischoff / Envitec Biogas AG: EnviTec Biogas GmbH was founded in 2002 after decades of experience in plant construction, project business, and management of agricultural holdings. EnviTec is represented worldwide with its own subsidiaries, joint ventures, and sales offices. In Germany, Envitec is operating about 40 biogas plants >500 kw el. They are looking for alternative use of the digestates from their biogas plants. Usually, biogas plants need additional heat supply during winter season (about 4 months in winter). The
2 combustion of digestate and mixtures with other raw materials could be an important contribution to improve the operation and feasibility of biogas plants. Based on combustion tests, market research on available combustion and precipitator technologies as well as a study on the economics of different utilisation concepts was conducted. The following results were discussed: a Combustion tests with digestate pellets and pellets made of digestates and wood (50/50) The fuel analysis of digestate pellets and the bottom ash analysis were done by DBFZ. The combustion tests were carried out by Pusch AG and evaluated together with DBFZ. For the combustion tests, a combustion appliance < 100 kw of P&H, Type PH47 and a precipitator of Schräder, Type Hydrocube were used. The major results are listed in the following table: Fuel mean CO OGC NO x HCl SO 2 Dust max./ min. value mean max./ min. value mean max./ min. value mean max./ min. value mean max./ min. value mean max./ min. value mg/m³ i.n., 13 Vol.-% O 2 Digestate pellets / / / / / / 35 Mixed pellets / / / / / / 11 The emission thresholds for the combustion of non woody biomass according to 1st BImschV (Federal Immissions Control Regulations) and TA Luft (Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control) are listed in the following table: Parameter Unit Step 1 (bis ) 1. BImSchV Step 2 (after ) TA Luft ( 3, Abs.1, Nr. 8, 13) (Nr ) Range of performance 4 < 100 kw NWL 0,1 < 50 MW FWL Reference oxygen content [Vol.-%] Dust [mg/m³ (i.n.)] < 1 MW FWL 50 1 MW FWL 20 CO [mg/m³ (i.n.)] 1000 (250*) 400 (250*) 250 OGC [mg/m³ (i.n.)] NO x [mg/m³ (i.n.)] 600* 500* < 1 MW FWL MW FWL 400 SO 2 [mg/m³ (i.n.)] HCl [mg/m³ (i.n.)] Dioxine/Furanes [ng/m³ (i.n.)] 0.1* 0.1 * Requirements for type tests; FWL: Thermal output; NWL: nominal heat output Based on these results, the discussion of the combustion characteristics of digestate pellets were done. High SO 2 -, HCl-, NO x -Emissions for the pure pellets were measured which are above the existing emission thresholds. An improvement can be achieved with the addition of 50 % wood. In contrast, existing dust emission thresholds can be kept even with pure digestate pellets. The most critical parameters of the fuel are the high nitrogen and sulfur content. They require fuel optimization and an
3 adapted combustion technology. For combustion plants up to 500 kw flue gas recirculation is recommended. Further tests with other mixtures of digestates and wood in different combustion appliances should be performed. Furthermore, the analysis of the bottom ash from the combustion of digestate pellets according to the German regulation on fertilizers DüMV indicates a good applicability as a fertilizer. Thus, the use as additive to PF- or NPK fertilizers or other mineral-organic fertilizeres up to 30 % seems to be reasonable. b Utilisation concepts including economics The following concepts were set up: Reference concept 1a - Reference concept, actual state Biogas plant (500kW el ), purchase of 300 kw fossil heat and disposal of the digestates 1b Reference concept, alternative version Biogas plant (500kW el ), without purchase of 300 kw fossil heat, disposal of the digestates 2 3 Application concepts for the combustion of the digestates Biogas plant (500kW el ), Pelletisation and combustion of the digestates in a 300 kw combustion plant, Selling of the digestate pellets Biogas plant (500kW el ), Pelletisation and selling of the digestate pellets Concept 1a is the reference for concept 2 and concept 1b is the reference for concept 3. The plausibility and economics of the utilisation concepts were discussed. In principal an economic use of the digestate pellets in combustion plants is possible depending on the EEG remuneration, the load of the pelletising plant and the investments on the biogas, pelletising and combustion plant. It was decided to revise the utilisation concepts and the economics in detail including a sensitivity analysis. c Market research on combustion and precipitator technologies A market overview on combustion and precipitator technologies was provided by DBFZ. The available technologies were discussed and possible manufacturers were figured out. Further decisions were not done. d Discussion of further steps and finalisation of work Organisation of a workshop The following points were discussed and decided: The study will be finalised at the beginning of The confidentiality must be clarified before
4 the publication of the results. The results of both studies (utilisation of grape marc and utilisation of digestates) will be presented within a final workshop to several target groups. The workshop will be jointly organised by all involved key actors so far (DBFZ, Pusch AG, Envitec AG and Agroscience GmbH). It is planned to do the workshop at Agroscience in Neustadt a.d. Weinstraße. Local authorities will be particularly invited to the workshop. Before or after the workshop a bilateral meeting with DBFZ, Pusch AG, Envitec AG and Agroscience GmbH and the local authority is planned. The participants confirmed their support of the topic on mixed biomass pellets with an LOI.
