Dedicated in Octber 2002, the curthuse is expected t cnsume apprximately 43 percent less energy than a standard building. Design strategies that helped achieve this gal include high-perfrmance glazing, maximum use f natural light, displacement ventilatin, energy-efficient electric lighting, variable speed air handling, and building integrated PVs. The building als serves as a mdel fr designs that balance security and sustainability. The prject budget was increased apprximately 7 percent t cver envirnmental features. ALFRED A. ARRAJ U.S. COURTHOUSE Prtland, Oregn Architects and engineers created a dynamic learning space fr 1,800 students that achieved exceptinal energy savings. Windws, skylights, and light shelves prvide natural light views t 90 percent f ccupied spaces. Mechanically cntrlled dampers, luvers, and air stacks prvide natural ventilatin and cling. Cncrete slabs and masnry walls serve as thermal mass t stabilize interir air temperatures. Schl fficials anticipate the building will use 44 percent less energy than a cnventinal building, saving the schl district at least $69,000 per year in energy csts.
