Improving Competitiveness through Energy Management Presentation to Kenya Flower Council by: Eng. Kiremu Magambo Rencon Associates Ltd
Introduction KAM, MoE and Donors collaborating to promote Energy efficiency in industries Overall objective is to institutionalize energy management in Kenya Other objectives - reduce costs of production hence improve competitiveness of local industry - Environmental benefits (GHG Reduction) Improving competitiveness through energy management 2
Introduction 2 Rencon is a KAM consultant for Industrial Energy Auditing and Training on RE and has 12 years experience Happy to share our experience with KFC Improving competitiveness through energy management 3
Energy Audits Results 1 Involved in over 20 energy audits In the early years, there was a lot of waste especially on thermal energy (insulation, boiler tune-ups, steam leakages etc) Even in electrical, savings were substantial incandescent bulbs, compressed air systems leakages, idling equipment etc. Improving competitiveness through energy management 4
Energy Audits Results 2 Energy audits identified many ECMs with huge savings ranging 15% to 30% in most cases A lot has been done by KAM, Government and Donors awareness, training, etc. Recent audits by Rencon show marked improvement in energy use in industry i.e % savings Improving competitiveness through energy management 5
Implementation of EE Projects Industry has responded well through implementation of no-cost, low cost projects identified through Energy Audits or internally Others have institutionalized energy management policies, energy managers, training etc. Published case studies Spin Knit, BAT etc. savings above 25% Improving competitiveness through energy management 6
Energy Sources and Uses in Flower Industry Main source of energy is electricity Major users: - Pumping for irrigation and spraying - Lighting especially floodlighting at night for some flowers - Refrigeration cold rooms - warming seeds propagation Improving competitiveness through energy management 7
Energy Sources and Uses in Flower Industry Cooking - Kitchens Hot water Laundry Office equipment Transportation fuel in-farm and road Improving competitiveness through energy management 8
Energy Saving Opportunities in flower industry 1 Energy optimisation/conservation: make best use of energy available avoid wastage Energy efficiency: effectiveness of energy use or conversion principally a function of equipment design and require equipment change or retrofitting Improving competitiveness through energy management 9
Energy Saving Opportunities in flower industry 2 Renewable energy options e.g. biogas from flower waste for electricity generation and solar water heating, wind mills for pumping etc. Viability of energy optimization, energy efficiency and RE require energy auditing and feasibility studies. Improving competitiveness through energy management 10
Energy Saving Opportunities in flower industry 3 Pumping - Rightsizing of underloaded pump motors - Retrofit with efficiency motors - Demand management - Maintenance - Variable frequency drives for varying flows Improving competitiveness through energy management 11
Energy Saving Opportunities in flower industry 4 Lighting - replace electromagnet ballasts with electronic - Use high efficacy technologies for floodlighting - skylights - Operate lights only when needed automatic controls Improving competitiveness through energy management 12
Energy Saving Opportunities in flower industry 5 Refrigeration - ensure proper temperature settings - avoid leakages (doors closed, seals proper - check that motors are properly loaded Improving competitiveness through energy management 13
Case Study Flower Farm 1 ECM 1: Rightsize pump replace 15kW with 5kW Energy savings = 3500kWh/year Cost Savings = KSh 71,000 Investment cost = KSh60,000 Payback period = 10 months Improving competitiveness through energy management 14
Case Study Flower Farm 1 ECM 2: Two pumps operated simultaneously with delivery valves 60% closed Fully open valve and switch off other pump. Energy savings = 40,000kWh/year Cost Savings = KSh 811,000 No expenditure! Improving competitiveness through energy management 15
Case Study Flower Farm 2 Delamping done but ballasts left in place 44 lamps - disconnect redundant ballasts Energy savings = 5700kWh/year Cost Savings = KSh 100,000 Investment cost = KSh 0,000 Payback period = immediate Improving competitiveness through energy management 16
Case Study Flower Farm 2 Replace electromagnetic ballasts with electronic ballasts in tube fluorescent lamps Energy savings = 6000 kwh/year Cost Savings = KSh 110,000 Investment cost = KSh 200,000 Payback period = 2 years Improving competitiveness through energy management 17
Energy Management 1 Energy is a significant resource and cost that requires planning and control. Its therefore a management issue Energy management is the process of understanding and managing energy expenses through energy efficiency and optimization of plant operation to reduce energy wastage. Improving competitiveness through energy management 18
Energy Management 2 It is recommended that KFC memebers taker steps to institutionalize energy management in the organizations Improving competitiveness through energy management 19
Steps to Institutionalization of Energy Management Develop policy Appoint an energy leader/manager /coordinator/officer Establish an energy management committee or designate existing committee Prepare annual activities & budgets Implement, monitor and verify Improving competitiveness through energy management 20
Energy Committee: Duties and Responsibilities 1 To design and implement the energy conservation programs Review progress of conservation programs Prepare management report Budgeting for the energy conservation program Awareness creation in the company Draft and update company energy policy Improving competitiveness through energy management 21
Duties and Responsibilities 2 Energy Leader/Co-ordinator Coordinate all interdepartmental and external energy conservation efforts Progress monitoring Preparing relevant reports Improving competitiveness through energy management 22
Appreciation Thank you for giving me this opportunity to contribute towards this KFC endeavor to improve local industry competitiveness Questions and comments welcome Eng.
