1 MODULE DESCRIPTOR TITLE Degradation and Surface Engineering SI MODULE CODE S CREDITS 10 LEVEL 6 JACS CODE H100 SUBJECT GROUP Materials Engineering DEPARTMET Engineering & Mathematics MODULE LEADER M.D.Bramhall OTIOAL STUD HOURS B TPE Tutor-led Tutordirected Selfdirected Total Hours MODULE AIM(S) (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) To enable the student to develop a systematic approach to the description of surfaces of common engineering metallic alloys, polymers, concrete and wood. To develop further understanding of the processes of of materials under ambient atmospheric conditions, exposure to aqueous environments, gaseous environments and in the case of polymers exposure to UV radiation or high temperature. To develop understanding of the modes of failure exhibited by material subject to adverse demand and physical environments. To appreciate the methods by which the performance of engineering components can be enhanced using surface engineering processes. MODULE LEARIG OUTCOMES By engaging successfully with this module a student will be able to: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) Describe the physical and chemical condition of engineering surfaces and the modification to material microstructures by surface treatments or. Identify the mechanism of wear and relate these to the properties of the material being considered. Appraise the suitability of materials for use in elevated temperature and aqueous environments, and in-service monitoring techniques. Appraise the various surface hardening processes and to analyse the mechanism of each in terms of structural change and relevant transfer process. To appraise the properties, technical and economic factors, that affect the use, choice and performance of coatings and methods used to apply them.
2 IDICATIVE COTET A. Degradation. Study of the following types of material process. Surface Integrity, Surface Removal, Residual Stress, Topography, Wear Mechanisms and the interaction of physical wear, microwelding and erosion. Aqueous (wet) corrosion in terms of Electrode potentials. The ernst Equation, Electrochemical cells and inhibitors. The effects of stress, and corrosion in terms of stress corrosion, corrosion fatigue, hydrogen assisted cracking. Prevention techniques such as cathodic protection and paint systems will be included. Atmospheric corrosion in terms of humidity, pollution (SO 2, O 2 ) and film formation. The effects of high temperature dry oxidation on oxide film volume, and protectiveness. The corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete and its manifestation and avoidance. The weathering on non metals, cracking of polymers, and of stone and ceramics will be studied. B. Surface Engineering Thermal treatments, surface hardening of alloys, carburising, nitriding and carbo-nitriding, metallic coatings. Processes such as induction hardening, laser hardening, CVD, PVD, will be discussed. The diffusion processes involved in chemical treatment. Wet processes such as electroless, electroplating and anodising will be studied. Organic coatings such as paints, PTFE, PVC. LEARIG AD TEACHIG METHODS Students will be supported in their learning, to achieve the above outcomes, in the following ways: Teaching will be by means of lectures, tutorials and practicals. Guest lecturers will be used where appropriate to bring in current research expertise. Students will keep a weekly reflective journal of lectures and supporting activities, whilst working on a group case study. ASSESSMET STRATEG AD METHODS Tas k o. TASK DESCRIPTIO SI Code % Weighting of overall module mark Word Count / Duration 1 Coursework CW 100% 3000 to 5000 words Inmodule retrieval available 40% Percentage Pass Mark or Pass/Fail Students will undertake group work for the coursework task in the form of a case study on a 'surface engineering & ' topic, whilst completing an ongoing journal of their weekly studies, based on lecture and laboratory input. Ongoing weekly reflection will be required, with formative feedback from the academic staff. Reporting will be in the form of a final portfolio
3 that may incorporate small video clips produced during the case study work. Peer review and evaluation will be used to help define individual marks from the group elements of this assessment. ASSESSMET CRITERIA Assessment Description Portfolio of individual learning Marks Allocated Case Study: Impact value (10), use of media (10), clarity and (50) communicative value (15), including structure, (15) e.g. Introduction, Subject Review, Discussion, Conclusions. Technical Content - Critical Review of background literature, (50) both within their final portfolio on particular aspects of surface engineering and technology: See below the specific criteria: Total 100 Typical marks: Excellent Average below average unsatisfactory Analysis of several aspects of surface engineering/ technology, referring to relevant theory and examples from references. Valid suggestions for possible/ latest improvements in technology, with justification. Calculations if appropriate. Wide range of cited references in correct style from a variety of sources books, articles, internet. Analysis of some aspects of surface engineering and technology. Critique of several methods/ theories, going to a reasonable depth. Several relevant references. Referencing in Harvard / Scientific style, with alphabetical list or numerical at the end. All refs to Learning Centre recommendations (see leaflet/ online). Technology misunderstood, or incorrect analysis of surface engineering and technology. Technical content superficial, not valid or relevant. Only 1-2 refs, or refs not relevant. Copies of sections or ideas from other sources without justification or explanation. o references. FEEDBACK Students will receive feedback on their performance in the following ways: Formative feedback in seminars/ tutorials and practical classes, with regular feedback reviews of their reflective portfolios. Summative feedback on the coursework task, both written and verbal, with final marks entered into GradeCentre.
