Site Odour Improvements Installation of a bio-filter Major rendering plant upgrade with new extraction ducting from rendering to bio filter New enclosures for the effluent treatment New enclosure for milli-screening/contra-shears Changes to cleaning down of yards Stock trucks stopped being able to dumping their effluent on site Improved wash down facilities for truck to wash out Covering of waste water pits/interceptors Covers on main waste bins and specified pick-up times for waste bins Odour neutralising sprays on perimeter fencing in yards, rendering and effluent treatment areas Running the rendering main drier at a lower temperature Locals directly reporting odours to TPL
. Process flow of stock and product
. Waste water process flow
. Bins and Truck wash
Water blasting off site of waste bins on long weekends Improved washing facilities for trucks Covers on all product bins and waste bins Twice daily wash down of the area
. Yards
Yards Daily wash down of the yards in the off season and twice daily wash downs during the on season Odour neutralising sprays around perimeter chlorine dioxide All stock is washed on site
. Rendering
Rendering Process odour sources extracted to the bio filter Ducts are cleaned on a maintenance schedule Labour continually monitoring rendering and washing down to keep plant clean with no product left over at the end of the processing day No off site product brought on to site to render and all rendering product is fresh Main equipment is PLC controlled and data logged Improved contacts/relationships in place to remove product from site in the event of a breakdown Processing Manager is notified of any breakdown over one hour
. Effluent treatment
Effluent treatment and waste All sumps are cleaned on maintenance cycles DAF by-product is loaded out between 11pm and 5am each day and sent for composting All by-product loadouts are carried out with trucks trays covered and extracted to the bio-filter No product left in the bin over the weekend Scheduled pick up times for waste bins Wash down of the areas every shift Water blasting off site of waste bins on long weekends
Technical review findings Balancing of air flow between rendering/effluent treatment. The current consent specifies extraction rates on specific items of equipment. By not specifying extraction rates the extraction can be changed to be more efficiently balanced giving better/more air removal a point source Better capture of odour at source Given the ability to change extraction rates a number of improvements have been identified 2 Decanters Separator drain enclosure Mill area General rendering area Sumps in and around the rendering process Rendering temperature and humidity This items needs future investigation and may be very difficult to achieve Monitoring of the bio filter bed pressure drop This modification is being arranged
