2 Mental Health Foundation Job Description Job title Reporting to Responsible for Hours Research and valuation Manager (Scotland) Head of Programmes Scotland Research Staff and Consultants 28 / 0.8fte (negotiable) Salary 33,143-37,000 Contract length Job location Permanent Glasgow Main Purpose of Job To lead the Foundation s research and evaluation programmes in Scotland The post holder will: Lead research and evaluation programmes including being the lead researcher for See Me Scotland s national programme to eliminate mental health stigma and discrimination Maintain a robust understanding of public mental health to identify gaps and need for further research and development work. Remain appraised of relevant research related to public mental health and promote research informed practice and policy within the Foundation and externally. Lead research and evaluation funding proposals and support funding bids of colleagues via research and evaluation expertise. Manage senior researchers, officers, assistants and consultants as required
3 Provide research and evaluation support to the MHF Scotland team and across the organisation. Present and disseminate research including written reports, academic publications, and presentations to achieve policy and practice change. ngage with academic, public and third sector partners, including at the most senior level, in furtherance of the objectives of the Foundation. Act as representative of the Mental Health Foundation at external steering groups, forums and national research and policy meetings as agreed. Maintain positive relationships with the Foundation s stakeholders, including service users and carers, and ensure they are involved in informing Scottish research. Deputise for the Head of Programmes Scotland / Head of Scotland in their absence or where requested to do so. Principal tasks and responsibilities: 1. Strategic Manage programme evaluation on mental health stigma and discrimination with See Me Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of research and policy issues spanning both public mental health and mental health. nsure research and evaluation projects are developed and delivered through sound and rigorous processes including reviewing appropriate literature, policy and practice, develop hypotheses and employing appropriate methodology. Identify opportunities for new funded research and lead on developing proposals.
4 Manage the production of reports and other publications (including peer-reviewed articles), briefings and guidelines for a variety of stakeholders. Disseminate the findings from research and maximise their impact including leading on the production of articles for academic journals. Support policy and programmes through raising awareness of research findings and supporting their translation into practice and service improvements. Contribute to the Foundation s Scottish operational plan and UK strategic plan. Represent the Foundation at events, conferences and seminars as required, including chairing or membership of advisory/expert group meetings. Promote and present MHF policies and messages in a range of settings including Scottish government meetings, parliamentary groups, conferences and universities. 2. Managerial Manage research and evaluation programmes ethically and professionally. Produce and oversee clear project plans, including agreed objectives, outcomes and measures, budget, deliverables and milestones. Oversee project management procedures, keep records up to date. Review the performance of projects, to ensure they are delivering to agreed deliverables and timescales, reporting and addressing problems where identified. Maintain positive relationships with funders and report back to funders on progress of projects as required throughout the life and on the conclusion of the project. nsure financial procedures are followed professionally, managing financial performance of projects, including budgets and identifying risks.
5 Manage, support and supervise research staff, specified project staff and consultants that may be employed on particular projects in their day to day work. Lead, undertake and supervise staff on high quality research such as: literature reviews, qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, action research and appreciative enquiry, and presenting project findings in a credible manner. 3. Business development Identify and lead on research and evaluation funding bids Development purposeful research partnerships with external organisations including universities, public sector and third sector agencies. Work closely with other departments in the Foundation 4. Communication/Liaison Lead on preparation of publications to varied audiences to maximise impact of research. Review and disseminate research findings to relevant audiences, including within the Foundation, academic publications, books, media, online and conference presentations Liaise with colleagues in other departments, ensuring they are provided with the information and support they require for fundraising, marketing and media relations. Work in partnership with Scottish teams and with UK research staff Work professionally and positively with partners including See Me staff Liaise with finance staff regarding payments as required by the Head of Scotland.

7 Mental Health Foundation Person Specification xperience Leading the design and delivery of research projects including complex programme evaluation Producing high quality and engaging reports and articles for a range of audiences xperience of applied research Developing successful research or evaluation funding proposals Participatory research and consultation approaches Undertaking evidence/literature reviews ssential / Desirable Knowledge Broad knowledge of mental health and public health fields Knowledge of equality, diversity and social justice issues Knowledge of qualitiative and quantitative research approaches, including the strengths and limitations of each Skills Persuasive and clear communication and presentation skills for range of audiences Strong all-round research and evaluation skills including quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches Good inter-personal skills and ability to lead teams and collaborate across teams Ability to manage a busy, varied workload and meet deadlines IT Skills including quantitative and qualitative data analysis software packages (SPSS, xcel, N-vivo) Ability to quickly build credibility internally and externally Personal Characteristics mpathy with the Foundation and its aims Flexible and adaptable working style Sensitivity and commitment to equal opportunities Ability to be a representative of the Foundation reflecting its values and priorities Qualifications Masters Degree in relevant field PhD or equivalent experience (candidates without a PhD but with strong experience and ability will be considered) D
