4 Traineeships Learner Support Quality tpm leading the way in skills and support 7 What is employability? Completing a Traineeship will greatly improve your employability. Employability has become a buzz word in recent years. In plain English it is explained as the qualities that make somebody more attractive as an employee. One of the biggest complaints employers have is that young people don t realise what is expected of them in the workplace day-to-day. What skills will I get? On a Traineeship with tpm, skills and qualities will be developed in everything ranging from self esteem and confidence to financial skills and time management. The course also covers the basics such as being professional with colleagues, looking and dressing appropriately and knowing how to deal with telephone queries confidently. Traineeships Traineeships focus on giving young people the skills, experience and behaviours to gain and hold down a good job. Covering business administration, childcare, hairdressing or barbering, the courses deliver the skills needed to become employable in the student s chosen industry. Who qualifies for a Traineeship? Anybody who is eligible to work in England but has little or no work experience; is unemployed and aged between 16 and 18. Anybody who has already achieved a Level 3 qualification is not eligible to go on a Traineeship. Will I get paid? You won t be paid, but employers sometimes give expenses for things like travel and meals. However the course itself will not cost you anything and tpm will provide all the learning resources and stationery. 100 of students said they received good or outstanding support from tpm staff.

Ellie explains what getting this far has entailed: I started here as a Saturday girl when I was at school. Then as an apprentice I have had lots of training with tpm - plus I even got to cut and colour paying clients in the salon as part of my training. I m just completing my third year - including being coached by Barbara herself - I am about to be a junior stylist at one of the best salons in the region. Apprenticeships I am about to be a An Employer s Perspective junior stylist at one of the best salons in the region Ellie Sinnott, barbara daley Hair & Beauty Georgia Doyle, aged 20, is an Advanced Apprentice at The Salon, in St Helens. Georgia has been with tpm and her employer for three years. Georgia says: I love the responsibility I get through working as part of a small team. I m hopeful the skills I have can help me continue my career offshore at some point, maybe a cruise ship or abroad. Paul Daley spends most of his day managing barbara daley Hair & Beauty on Lime Street in Liverpool; he is a hands on boss ensuring everything runs smoothly for the several hundred clients they serve every week. The award-winning hairdressers is celebrating 25 years in business and Paul explains how apprentices have been crucial in their success for more than a decade: Apprentices have always played a significant role in our business, we believe in investing in individuals and bringing them up through the ranks. Paul has told us about the partnership with tpm and why the relationship works: tpm are like an extension of our business, they understand the business needs. First the tpm team skills up our apprentices with lots of hairdressing practice, then we boost that with in-house training here at barbara daley. The process is very successful - many of our stylists started as apprentices with tpm. Paul employs 25 staff at the salon. It is clear that barbara daley is amongst the top names in hairdressing today. With a host of celebrity clients, the salon s reputation is recognised as much by the hairdressing industry as by the public. barbara daley scooped the Hair magazine award naming them as Best Salon in the North barbara daley stylists work for many magazines and fashion shows. This just goes to show that successful hairdressing apprentices can go on to become stylists in a top salon. Others enter the fashion or photographic professions, contribute to assignments in film and tv, work abroad on cruise ships or enter teaching and training. tpm is an extension of our business here 100 tpmuk at barbara daley Paul Daley, barbara daley Hair & Beauty of employers agreed their apprentices achieved their learning goals and qualifications
6 Business Administration Apprenticeships CPD Culture Dyslexia Learner Support Progression tpm leading the way in skills and support 11 Progression Sarah Whittle is 21 and grew up in the West Derby area of Liverpool. After working hard and attaining her GCSEs she made the tough decision that sixth form wasn t for her. Rather than taking the path towards university Sarah decided she wanted to work full time. The cashier job she did part time whilst at school became full time. At times she really felt at a loss. It wasn t the job she wanted but every time she went for an interview the feedback was that she didn t have the experience needed. After the first few interviews Sarah knew more than ever that she wanted a role in a business environment with career prospects. But doors just weren t opening. On one of her trawls of the internet looking for jobs, she submitted an application to tpm for an Apprenticeship. Sarah explains: I felt like I was trapped - all the jobs I was looking for needed experience. But I didn t know how to get it. Then I came across an advert for tpm, I didn t really know how Apprenticeships worked but I thought it was a worth a go so I submitted the application form. The very next day Sarah received a call from a tpm advisor who interviewed her before the end of the week. The following week Sarah had an interview with an employer The Dyslexia Foundation and was offered a job the same day. Sarah adds: I went from scanning frozen chickens to a job where I was helping people with learning differences - from frustrated children to grandmas with ipads within weeks! Although to begin with Sarah took a pay cut, her determination has been rewarded. Within a year she was earning more than in her previous job and had attained an Intermediate Apprenticeship in business administration. She soon progressed to an Advanced Apprenticeship and has been promoted to the role of Communications & Fundraising Officer. It is clear that Sarah has her foot well and truly on the career ladder. 81 of our students say support from tpm is outstanding What being a business administration apprentice has meant to me: Job satisfaction I ve completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship in business administration and am studying for an Advanced Apprenticeship My further education is being funded by my employer I m studying for a BTEC diploma in dyslexia awareness & recognition I m working towards a certificate in fundraising The perks range from working in the world-famous Albert Dock to being able to afford things like holidays abroad! Working with tpm has brought stability to our business Steve O Brien, CEO, The Dyslexia Foundation The Dyslexia Foundation helps to diagnose and promote a positive attitude to dyslexia. Partnering with tpm has meant that we reach and support a lot more people than we would alone. During the last ten years we have been working with tpm, guiding them to embrace the challenges of dyslexia. tpm has developed a blueprint to ensure young people are given the tools and support they need to make a positive difference to their learning and the workplace. A practical example of this is specialist IT equipment. In recent years we ve progressed and grown alongside tpm, and their team has helped us to recruit our own apprentices. The charity s staff have also been continuing their own professional development through tpm. All of this has fed into succession planning at the Foundation, taking the stability of our own organisation to the next level. enquries@tpmnow.co.uk
7 Childcare Apprenticeships Culture Dyslexia Learner Support Quality Progression tpm leading the way in skills and support 13 Growing together Sophie has overcome the challenges of dyslexia and is working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship. Sophie Byrne, aged 20, is employed by The Rockbourne Group of children s nurseries that operates across the North West. Setting and maintaining high standards is at the heart of the service they provide and this can only be achieved with the help of good staff like Sophie. Based in the group s Childwall Valley nursery, Sophie also attends tpm s training centre in the city centre once a week. Here she has been supported with her maths and English. Extra help has been required because Sophie has a significant dyslexia fingerprint. Sophie explains: When I was at school I always felt as if things weren t right, I failed English and it wasn t until then that a red flag went up about my differences. With support I stayed on at sixth form for maths and English, but I still didn t achieve maths! I wasn t inspired and I was desperate to pass my English and ICT exams. I tried college and then a job but I didn t have the confidence to succeed. One of my friends suggested I speak to tpm and that s when my life changed. The team at tpm gave me the support I really needed and I started to believe in myself. Like many others Sophie s dyslexia had gone undiagnosed during her school life. She struggled through unsupported. Sophie adds: I can t believe I was 17 before I got the help I needed. tpm kept telling me I could do it, and I have! I ve completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship that has helped me earn more and Rockbourne are supporting me on my Advanced Apprenticeship. Sue Smith, a nursery manager for the group explains the company s culture: Our approach for the children in our care is for the development of the whole child. We provide care and learning opportunities to reflect this. Expectations are high for everyone - partners, suppliers and staff. The Rockbourne Group believe tpm is the right partner to help them maintain the exceedingly high standards they achieve. Sophie is reaching her full potential through her career and tpm. Speak to a tpm consultant about your business or career options. The team at tpm gave me the support I really needed and I started to believe in myself. Sophie Byrne, Childwall Valley Nursery. 8 Schools & Alternative Curriculum Alternative Curriculum Schools Programme Dear School, Whilst there is only one way to stand still, there are many ways to make progress. When a pupil needs a vocational alternative to the standard curriculum, choose tpm - the affordable partner - to help you get it right. Thank you, Every pupil that comes to us will get a personalised programme. tpm excels at supporting learning difference and has a high success rate in helping young people achieve. The results we deliver simply wouldn t be possible without the amazing businesses that choose to partner with us. They provide critical work experience for young and inexperienced pupils. 100 tpm of pupils progressed to further education, an Apprenticeship or employment. statistic relates to those on alternative curriculum with tpm Learner Support Quality...sounds boring but it definitely isn t. Some pupils are better suited to a vocational rather than academic route. tpm s alternative curriculum programme enables schools to help these pupils achieve success by engaging them in occupation-related training and certificating this learning. This service is on offer for pupils aged 14 to 16. By skilling young people up through experiences outside the classroom we also focus on wellbeing. This has a significant impact on the next stage of their life journey. But don t just take our word for it, Ellie Jones who is an applied learning assistant at Archbishop Blanch School in Liverpool says: I highly recommend tpm as an alternative education provider that satisfies all demands in line with OFSTED. They provide excellent tuition from highly talented and motivated staff. Ask us about our Alternative Curriculum programme enquiries@tpmnow.co.uk NOW - and then... tpm is a place where great futures really do begin. Our staff are evidence of this culture, as so many of them began as trainees or apprentices themselves. We believe that staff excel and are happiest when they work to their strengths and are supported in their development. This is the dynamic that we seek when working with students and employers alike.
