3 Overview The AFFCO Leadership Retreat has been created to provide overall leadership and business skills the horticultural industry. The program includes: Leadership skills Strategic thinking Team building Succession planning Business management Employment law Public Speaking Finance Over the duration of the Retreat, participants will be involved in lectures, in depth case studies, workshops and group discussion with highly qualified and respected guest presenters. The Retreat is fully residential including all meals and accommodation and participants are required to stay onsite for the duration of the program. Limited places will be available to provide an open trusting learning platform with participants involved being from different companies and segments of the industry. Learning Outcomes: As a result of the program, each participant can expect to gain: an appreciation of the demands of leadership within the current economic environment awareness of the primary leadership styles understanding of their own strengths and development needs, and how these interact communication strategies decision making and financial skills increased awareness of workplace safety in your business skills to deliver messages with confidence, clarity and influence awareness of safety legislation and the consequences of non compliance Participants can expect to understand: how leadership styles can be influenced by different business and personal contexts strategy development and implementation how to analyse their own business so they can make more confident business decisions confidence to implement knowledge into the business the range of issues which need to be considered for successful succession planning the implications of the new Horticultural Award and employment law how it effects your business Participants can expect to experience: a retreat - a reflection on events and experiences of our personal and work lives networking opportunities with likeminded national industry colleagues Who should attend the AFFCO Young Member Retreat: Individuals who want to be given the opportunity and have the passion to make a difference in the horticultural industry and lead by example. Includes growers, packers, marketers, business owners, family members, corporate employees, graduates of the 2010 AFFCO Retreat, industry colleagues and others involved in the horticultural supply chain. 4 Program Speakers Mark Rehn Dr Mark Rehn has 30 years of management consulting experience and specialises in working with clients at Board, CEO and executive levels to plan and implement comprehensive approaches to business transformation via best management practice. He has extensive experience in strategic business planning, and deployment across a wide range of public and private sector organisations. He is widely recognised for his ability to facilitate and train process design and improvement teams. Glenn McDermott Glenn McDermott has a diverse background in leadership development, having worked in some of Australia s leading businesses, notably BlueScope Steel and Visy. For the past 10 years Glenn has been involved in leadership programs, supporting leaders in understanding their particular strengths and development needs. A hallmark of Glenn s approach is the use of practical interventions and real life situations to support the development of today s leaders. Claire Flanagan-Smith Claire specialises in working with rural and regional communities, primarily on social, organisational and environmental questions, with exceptional skills in helping people make sense of things. Claire s sense-making techniques are complemented by excellent written and oral communication skills which means she is able to both achieve and document results. Claire holds a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering from RMIT University; hence her social and environmental experience is underpinned by a strong understanding for technical considerations. Andee Sellman Andee is a trusted business advisor and coach. After two decades of experience running businesses in different countries, cultures and industries as an executive, he has spent the last ten years advising business owners in marketing, HR, finance and governance through his own small business. This has included advisory board positions in a number of businesses. His ability to challenge, probe and highlight business issues means that he can add significant value quickly and effectively. He has the knack of using the figures to draw a picture of the business and use that to highlight the business issues. This has assisted business owners to make ongoing positive changes to their businesses. Nigel McGuckian Nigel McGuckian has spent the last 20 years working closely with rural people on business management, farming systems, training and decision making. Nigel has co-authored a number of publications for farmers on rural adjustment, business planning and farm succession planning. He regularly facilitates groups of farmers and industry representatives. He has a keen interest in rural leadership and developing a positive future for rural communities. He has run training programs throughout Australia in leadership, business management, group skills and succession planning. He works hard to involve people in their learning so they can learn to put what they have learnt into practice. Nigel was awarded the Leadership Victoria, community Leadership Award in Debbie Key Debbie has worked in leadership roles across a diverse range of industries; retail, manufacturing, transport and logistics and most notably the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games as a Program Coordinator for Volunteers. Debbie s career has seen her facilitate many leadership programs and bring her vast experience in leadership to the adult education field. This combination of talents provides a lively, interactive learning environment and a transfer of practical knowledge that participant s can apply to their own field of expertise. Richard Thompson Richard has 20 years experience in Employment Law and Workplace Relations including his roles as Senior Industrial Relations Advisor with an employer association, Industrial Relations Barrister, Partner (Workplace Relations) and most recently Principal of Archer Thompson Lawyers - a specialist workplace relations law. Gary Rowe Gary is the founder and CEO of Safety Action and has over 20 years experience in managing safety and risk management programs. Gary's key specialties include; safety culture and leadership, safety systems, risk assessments and independent audits. Stuart Constable Stuart has been working with organisations and individuals as a professional speaker, facilitator and trainer for around 20 years and in that time has personally taught, trained and coached thousands of people across Australia and South East Asia. Stuarts is regularly invited to speak at industry events and is so highly regarded by his peers that he was invited to speak at the National Leadership Summit. Stuart has also been featured in the Business Review Weekly and the Age Newspaper writing on issues of leadership, performance management and professional development.

5 Program Details and Schedule Leadership Glenn McDermott & Debbie Key Leaders today are challenged to deal with a range of people, situations, agendas and production issues - partner that with ever increasing time pressures and demands and it paints the picture of the modern workplace. One of the foundations for success as a leader is to know your own strengths, weaknesses and styles. Achieving a higher awareness of your own preferences, capabilities and development needs will assist in identifying the best way to respond to leadership demands. Public Speaking Stuart Constable Based on Stuart s upcoming book, Underwater with a Mouthful of Marbles, Stuart will introduce participants to his very own 3D Speaking and Presentation System. Through this system, Stuart will guide participants through the steps to develop a powerful presentation, as well as provide the exact formula to be followed when speaking in front of an audience. The reason why many business owners are disappointed in the performance of their business is they struggle to connect the financial outcomes with what they do in the business on a day to day basis. As a result when it comes to finance they feel like a fish out of water. This session will provide you a way of viewing your whole business on one page using The Financial Fence. This methodology will show you visually how the three key financial statements (Profit and Loss Account, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow) work together from a high level strategic viewpoint. Worked examples and live business examples will also be discussed. 6 General Information Program Dates May Young Leaders Retreat May Graduate & Senior Leaders Retreat Venue The program will be held at Grange Cleveland Winery, Lancefield, Victoria Venue details Cleveland Winery provides a great venue for the AFFCO Leadership Retreat,which is located in the Macedon Ranges just 45 minutes drive from Melbourne CBD and 30 minutes drive from Melbourne Airport. For more information visit or contact the hotel directly on Accommodation The program is fully residential and accommodation and meals are provided on site. Requirements AFFCO Young Leaders Retreat - for applicants aged between 20 to 35 years in the horticultural industry. AFFCO Graduate and Senior Leaders Retreat - for applicants aged 36 years plus or applicants who have graduated from the 2010 AFFCO Young Members Retreat. Participants accepted for attendance: 1. should be free from official company duties while participating in this program. 2. do not require any formal educational qualifications to attend the program. Participation Participation in the program is limited. Participants should be able to demonstrate passion and commitment to developing their leadership and business skills as well as a willingness to attend and participate actively in the retreat. Certificate A certificate of participation will be presented to all participants completing the program. Registration Fee AFFCO Young Leaders Retreat - $1, (plus GST). AFFCO Graduate/Senior Leaders Retreat - $ (plus GST) This fee includes all workshops, accommodation, meals and supplies. No refunds are possible for any part of the program not taken. Transportation/transfers, additional accommodation, telephone, alcoholic beverages and personal expenses such as laundry, room service and extra drinks are not included. Additional Accommodation Coordination of additional night/s accommodation can be arranged for participants if required. Transport/Transfers Transfers from Melbourne Airport to Lancefield return will be coordinated for all interstate participants if required. Additionally, AFFCO will make every endeavour to coordinate transport for participants travelling from the same region in order to reduce travel costs. Registration and Payment Your completed registration form should be forwarded to AFFCO. Acknowledgement of application and a tax invoice will be issued when this is received. Payment can be made by cheque, electronic transfer or credit card. Confirmation of registration will be forwarded upon receipt of payment. Cancellation Any cancellation after the set date (6 May 2011) will incur a charge of 50% of the program fee. However, a company may send a replacement if cancellation of the intended participant is necessary, subject to approval by AFFCO.
