3 THE EARN AS YOU LEARN OPTION Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. APPRENTICESHIPS EARN AS YOU LEARN 2 Designed with the help of employers, Apprenticeships offer a structured programme that provide you with the skills you will need to do a job well. You will spend most of your time learning on the job, but depending on the qualification you may be expected to attend college on a weekly, fortnightly or block release basis. You will study: A competence qualification to prove you can perform the skill, trade or occupation for your particular programme. A technical qualification to show you have learnt the relevant technical skills or knowledge and understand the concepts for the industry in which you are working (on some programmes this may be combined with the competence qualification.) Functional Skills e.g. Maths, ICT and English. Please note: To undertake an Advanced Apprenticeship you must have a supervisory or extended Apprenticeship role as part of your job. Apprenticeships are available to anyone aged 16 or over, not in full-time education. 3

4 APPRENTICESHIPS EXPLAINED An Apprenticeship is a real job with training that gives you the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications whilst you work. This could be the perfect choice if you are passionate about working in a certain industry and keen to get into work after leaving school or already have an employer who is willing to take you on as an Apprentice. If you already have a job that you want to turn into an Apprenticeship, your employer can get in touch with us to make this possible. ADVANTAGES Apprenticeships offer a number of advantages, including: You will earn money whilst you learn. You will gain a recognised qualification whilst working and gaining valuable workplace experience. An Intermediate Apprenticeship is equivalent to five good GCSE passes. An Advanced Apprenticeship is equivalent to two A Level passes. Employers say that Apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications. You can progress in your career without any student debt from university. Apprentices are treated just like any other employee, so you will get all of the same benefits such as paid holidays. With most Apprenticeships, you won t need to attend college at all. Ideal if you re keen to get into full-time work after leaving school. Some larger employers could pay for you to progress onto a Higher Apprenticeship or university. The number of people enrolling onto an Apprenticeship is at an all-time high. There really is no better time to start an Apprenticeship. FIND YOUR FUTURE 4 CONTACTS Telephone Apprenticeships direct on /selbycollegescbs apprenticeships@selby.ac.uk 5

5 DID YOU KNOW? 92% of Apprentices felt that their Apprenticeship had had a positive impact on their career. 82% of Apprentices say their Apprenticeship has improved their ability to do the job. Since 2010, there have been over 2million Apprenticeship starts in the UK. 28,000 Apprenticeship vacancies available online at any one time. Women take up 53% of all Apprenticeships. APPRENTICESHIPS ARE GETTING EVEN BETTER From April 2017, the Government began introducing Apprenticeship Standards, which will replace the current Apprenticeship Frameworks by Apprenticeship Standards reflect job roles rather than sectors, so the training you receive is tailored to suit you and the employer, and you will be better equipped to do your job. There will be more choice available, with around Apprenticeship Standards in development. Some larger employers also now have to pay into an Apprenticeship Levy, meaning they are more likely to take on Apprentices in the future, leading to a rise in Apprenticeship opportunities with nationally and internationally recognised companies. We will still offer all of the qualifications listed in this guide, but the names and assessment methods may change. You can find out more about the new standards online at gov.uk/government/collections/ apprenticeship-standards If you have any questions about the reforms, contact the team on the details below. 9 OUT 10 OF employers say that Apprenticeships have benefitted their business. 87% of Apprentices find the process of getting onto an Apprenticeship is easy. 8 Writing the Perfect CV Course Information Applying for a job or an Apprenticeship is a key skill. Many employers ask you to send them your Curriculum Vitae (CV), either with your application or on its own. Research shows that for every job advertised, employers receive on average between applications. Significantly, almost half of these applications are from candidates perfectly suitable for the role, so you need to stand out head and shoulders above the rest. Your CV is one way you can do this. Make Sure It's Neat and Tidy Remember to check your CV for accuracy, spelling and grammar. If you re not sure about this, ask someone at home or your GST or college tutor to proofread it for you. If you don t have access to a computer at home to type up your CV, you can always use one of the college s computers in the LRC or study areas. Tailor Your CV to a Job or Apprenticeship It is vital to ensure that what you write is relevant to each job or Apprenticeship application rather than just sending a generic CV. Increasingly, applicants are asked to send a digital copy of a CV, which could be sent through an electronic scanner to look for key words. Make sure you include mandatory requirements from the job advert in your CV to make sure that your application isn't overlooked. Keep it Short and Simple It should be easy to read, using simple language and avoiding slang expressions. Make sure it is no more than two sides of A4, and include a personal statement on the first page. Include your name and all relevant contact details to ensure that the employer can get in touch with you. Make sure your address sounds professional! You might also want to include any professional social media presence i.e. LinkedIn. List your education, including the schools you went to and the qualifications/ grades you achieved there. You should include any jobs you ve had to date, and any other relevant experience that shows you can take responsibility. You should also include the names of at least two references and their contact details. These can be employers, GSTs or college tutors, but not your relatives. Show Off Your Achievements! Always remember to show off your achievements including non-academic achievements for example passing your driving test, work-based qualificaitons such as first aid, how you have exceeded any goals you have set for yourself, how you overcame a problem. Always make sure you are honest about these as you might be asked about them in an interview. Check and Double Check! Avoid sloppy errors. Once you ve written your CV, take a fresh look the next day and ask a family member, a trusted friend, your GST or college tutor to check it over for you. Visit gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship to search for vacancies in your local area. We also post all of our Apprenticeship vacancies on social media and on the Selby College website, so make sure you follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date! Can I still get a degree? Yes. Apprenticeships are available at degree level, and some employers may pay for you to complete a degree to further your training. What if I don't have my Maths and English GCSEs? Intermediate Apprenticeships do not have any entry requirements, so if you don't have GCSEs in Maths and English, you can still apply. You will simply need to do Functional Skills in Maths and English as part of your Apprenticeship. Do I have to come into college? With most Apprenticeships, you will work full-time and not need to attend college at all. However, some Apprenticeships such as Accounting, Engineering and Hairdressing require you to attend college on day or block release to build upon your practical skills. How is an Apprenticeship different from a Vocational course? With an Apprenticeship, you spend most of your time in the workplace rather than at college, which means you gain valuable workplace experience outside of the classroom. With a Vocational course, you may complete a work placement, but will spend the majority of your time at college. If you have any further questions about the Apprenticeship application process, turning your current job into an Apprenticeship, or just want to get some advice on perfecting your CV, contact the Apprenticeships team, we're here to help! Tel: Apprenticeships@selby.ac.uk You can also come and see us at one of the Selby College Open Events (see the inside front cover of this guide for more details). Look out for our other Course Guides: Vocational (work-related) Courses and A Level Courses EARN AS YOU LEARN 36
