What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)? Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. In other words: Emotional Intelligence = People SMART
EQ includes 3 skills: Emotional awareness, being able to identify your own emotions and those of others; The ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problems solving; The ability to manage emotions, including the ability to regulate your own emotions, and the ability to cheer up or calm down another person.
Another Way to Look at EQ
I Know All I Need to Know to Be Effective Only 36% of the people tested are able to accurately identify their emotions as they happen.
Why EQ Matters to YOU EQ is so critical to success that is accounts for 58% of performance in all types of jobs. The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ adds $1,300 to an annual salary.

7 Everyday Tips for Developing Your EQ TEAMWORK REMAINS THE ONE SUSTAINABLE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE THAT HAS BEEN LARGELY UNTAPPED. ~PATRICK LENCIONI, OVERCOMING THE FIVE DYSFUNCTIONS OF A TEAM
1. Practice Observing How You Feel Set a timer for various points during the day. When the timer goes off, take a few deep breaths and notice how you re feeling emotionally. Pay attention to where that emotion is showing up as a physical feeling in your body and what the sensation feels like.
2. Pay Attention to How You Behave Notice how you act when you re experiencing certain emotions, and how that affects your dayto-day life.
3. Take Responsibility for Your Feelings and Behavior This is probably the most challenging step, but it s also the most helpful. Feelings can provide you with valuable information about your experience with the other person, as well as your own needs and preferences, BUT your feelings aren t another person s responsibility. Once you start accepting responsibility for how you feel and how you behave, this will have a positive impact on all areas of your life.
4. Practice Responding, Rather than Reacting Reacting is an unconscious process where we experience an emotional trigger, and behave in an unconscious way that expresses or relieves that emotion Responding is a conscious process that involves noticing how you feel, then deciding how you want to behave
5. Practice Empathizing with Yourself and Others Empathy is understanding why someone feels and behaves the way they do and then having the ability to communicate your understanding. Start by practicing with yourself: When you notice yourself feeling or behaving in a certain way, ask yourself Why do I think I m feeling like this/doing this? At first, your response might be I don t know, but keep paying attention to your feelings and behavior, and you ll start to notice different answers coming through.
6. Create a Positive Environment Make time to notice what is going well and where you feel grateful in your life. It will help you and can also be contagious to those around you!
7. Remember, EQ is a Lifetime Process It s a lifetime practice, and it is possible to keep improving. Even when you feel like you ve mastered these steps, remember to keep practicing, and you ll reap the benefits of EQ for the rest of your life.
