1 JOB TITLE: Trials Assistant GRADE: University support staff grade 3 ACCOUNTABLE TO: Trial Coordinators SALARY RANGE: 17,111-19,743 TERM: Fixed term 1 year with possibility of extension Background The University of Oxford is one of the world's leading higher education institutions undertaking teaching and research across a very wide range of academic subjects, to the highest international standards. The Medical Sciences Division is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for biomedical and clinical research and teaching. Medical Sciences is the largest academic division in the University of Oxford. The newly formed Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences is one of the clinical academic departments within the Medical Sciences and comprises four sections: Clinical Neurology, the Nuffield Division of Anaesthetics (NDA), the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology (NLO) and the Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain (FMRIB). The offices and research facilities of the Nuffield Division of Anaesthetics are based in the John Radcliffe Hospital. The academic section makes a significant contribution to the teaching of anaesthetic practice to clinical students as well as to postgraduate teaching. There is also a cluster of DPhil students based in the division. NDA also runs a successful course for preparation for the FRCA examination and has a medical simulation suite used to train a wide range of healthcare practitioners. In addition to the teaching activity the academic division has an international profile in running large-scale clinical trials, as well as having research groups for Pain Imaging Neuroscience; Pain; Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology research; Respiratory Physiology and Respiration. JOB SUMMARY We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised individual to join a team working in trials in intensive care units across the UK. The post-holder will provide clerical and secretarial support to the trial team and assist in all aspects of trial co-ordination. Excellent communication skills are required, as is meticulous record keeping. Intensive Care Units (ICUs) collaborating in our research return study data to the trial office. The post holder will assist trial co-ordinators within the group in co-ordinating data collection from ICUs, and carrying out some data entry and data scanning. Full training will be provided but ability to follow detailed instructions is essential. Key to the success of the trial groups is the smooth flow of data within the studies from ICUs around the UK to the trial office. This will involve ordering supplies and making delivery

2 arrangements by telephone and . The post-holder must have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, and have excellent organisational skills. The post-holder will be a valued member of the team and contribute to the success of the projects. PURPOSE: LOCATION: The purpose of this post is to support the smooth running of the research group s studies. The post is currently based in the Kadoorie Centre for Critical Care Research and Education at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Carry out secretarial and clerical duties as required by the trial team. 2. Deal with internal and external queries from suppliers and ICUs by letter, telephone, fax or Deal with correspondence, telephone calls and enquiries. Sorting and distributing mail to appropriate members of staff. 4. To use various trial databases to enter and retrieve data. 5. To ensure timely distribution of questionnaires to meet follow-up time frames. 6. Collate, photocopy and file records carefully to ensure ease of extraction. 7. Work within and follow established standard operating procedures relating to data coordination and general record keeping. 8. Ensure stationery stocks are maintained and ordered when necessary. 9. Keep trial office tidy at all times by ensuring stock put away once arrived, with all items clearly labelled for easy retrieval. 10. Assist in the co-ordination of travel and venue arrangements associated with training days and meetings 11. Prepare documentation/supplies for sending to collaborators. 12. Respond in helpful courteous manner at all times. 13. Liaise with other departments within the University and the Oxford Hospitals. Using the telephone to communicate with patients/staff etc. Proven organisational skills. Ability to keep meticulous (accurate and orderly) records. Ability to work systematically and follow detailed instructions. Ability to follow through on a task until completed. Confident and friendly telephone manner. Fully proficient in Microsoft computer packages (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). Hold a European Computer Driving Licence Previous experience of working in research environment

Pay and Benefits For a full-time appointment, the annual holiday entitlement will be 38 days (including 8 public holidays). The appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period. The age of retirement for university appointments is 65. Staff are eligible to join the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), which provides a pension and lump sum based on length of service and final salary; the employee contribution rate is currently 6.35% of basic salary. Almost everyone is eligible to join and, subject to the Statement of Pensions Policy which is issued with letters of appointment, all new staff are automatically treated as members unless they give notice in writing to say they do not wish to take part in the scheme. The University has a generous maternity leave scheme and also offers paternity leave to expectant fathers and partners, and adoption leave.
