Activities for the promotion of employability in graduates at the UC, Portugal
DPIP Planning and Professional Insertion Division SGA Academic Management Services GAI Applications Management GC Degrees Management GI Information and Fees Management Professional Insertion Office
PROFESSIONAL INSERTION OFFICE(1) The Professional Insertion Office of the UC, integrated in the Academic Management Services / Division of Planning and Professional Insertion Its mission is to support the employability of graduates in the labor market, developing its activities in cooperation with the different Faculties of the UC.
PROFESSIONAL INSERTION OFFICE(2) Directs its activities to more than 24,000 students from 41 1 st cycle courses, nd cycle courses (including integrated master courses), 71 3 rd cycle courses and 28 specialization courses, offered by 8 Faculties and other units.
MAJOR AIM To increase the quality of the teaching-learning process as well as to promote the employability of UC s graduates
ACTIONS Promote employability of students and graduates of the UC Ensure the dynamization of stages of awareness of the active life Increase the number of actions in partnership with entities in the real economy Improve students' levels of information on the requirements of the labor market
STRATEGIC ACTIVITIES 2012 (1) Organizethe"careerweek"eventtobeheldfor3days in each Faculty, aiming to: Bring students to the labor market and the current best practices of professional recruitment and selection Provide UC graduates information about how to access the world of work, about career development and management as well as about some important tools required for a better transition from higher education environment to the labor world
STRATEGIC ACTIVITIES 2012 (2) Organize the Professional Internships Program for 2012 lasting 1 to 3 months period as a key element in the students academic training and as an opportunity for business structure to closely assess thequalityoftrainingattheuc; Cooperate with employers to organize sessions of recruitment, selection and identification of profiles through students ' shortlist finalists. Organize an Employment Fair at the UC (November 2012), joining the demand and offer of employment
STRATEGIC ACTIVITIES 2012 (3) Launch the new portal for the dissemination of professional insertion opportunities and job vacancies and/ or professional internship Improve the communication addressed to students about specific employability and labor market needs usingthenewsletteroftheuc
STRATEGIC ACTIVITIES 2012 (4) Create a barometer for the employability of the UC graduates Due to the lack of studies on the employability of graduates from the, we aim to create a core of research that, on one hand, follows the career paths of the UC graduates and, on the other hand, analysis the occupational profiles valued by the employers - areas of training with more demand for labour market
OTHER ACTIVITIES Organization of the 2 nd Internship Summer Seminar focusing on the development of "soft skills in trainees and participants Companies and other organizations clearly expect that candidates combine strong technical skills with soft skills developed, reflecting the current paradigm of human resource management, marked by the complementarity between "hard skills" and "soft skills" in the evaluation, selection and promotion of employees, with the ultimate goal of successful employment of people and concomitant success of the organization itself
OTHER ACTIVITIES Career counseling -whenever there is need for career change, no identification with the initial formation Personalized guidance in the job search Training activities focused on developing skills and on "how to seek for employment"
DIFICULTIES Economic crisis in Portugal and in Europe and the reduction of opportunities and resources available Generalized idea that there is no employment for graduates, generating passivity among students and graduates and lack of interest to promote job careers Some resistance from students and graduates towards interregional mobility mainly to Lisbon and Porto, where business and job opportunities are at national level as well as to international mobility where there is currently great demand for qualified professionals in developing economies such as India, Brazil and PALOP
OPORTUNITIES Opportunities offered by new foreign markets Technological advances that changed the way people communicate through new means and new practices Increasing openness of institutions to both national and international cooperation enhancing the benchmarking in areas of excellence
