Some things you might already be aware of, such as our state of the art delivery fleet and award winning innovations, whilst other things might not be so obvious because of their complete integration into our every day workings as a business. What we hope will become clear is that what unites every process, every decision and every action we make along the journey, whether its work that s taking place in the workshop, on the road or in the boardroom, starts and ends with your safety in mind. 3 Welcome to our journey We believe safe working is the only way of working The boundaries of keeping people safe will never stop moving. That s the challenge we all face. We believe putting health and safety first, every time, should always be our number one priority. We ve created this brochure to help show you how we re taking that commitment and making things happen, whether that s through innovation, experience, or taking pride in finding answers to tomorrow s challenges today. We know that goes far beyond words, and means more than you ll read here today. Instead, what we hope you ll learn, is that whilst the challenges of keeping people safe will never stop moving, neither will we. The journey we take to keep you safe requires teamwork, expertise and a commitment to putting your welfare beyond everything else. 4 Product The safest way in your sector We ve been trusted to manage the wellbeing of workers for decades. We believe it s this experience of managing safety, however great the challenge, that makes us different. That s also why our expertise has been utilised in environments ranging from skyscrapers to power stations, motorways to airports and utilities to retail settings. Product Protecting your wellbeing worldwide The basis of our business is to enable safe and effective working at height by providing the right equipment, in the right place, at the right time. With a global fleet of more than 20,000 platforms, we re proud to be able to safeguard the welfare of workers, wherever we re required. We also continue to invest in ensuring that the equipment that makes its way to you is the safest it can be. As the rest of the safety journey will show you, this investment takes place not only at sales, engineering and operational levels, but even before we ever purchase a machine. Safety from the start In 2011, we established a New Product Committee to help manage our fleet investment. Not only did this consider the most appropriate equipment to most closely suit the needs of you, our customers, but also the platforms which we believe provide the safest means of access on the market. In 2012 we invested 23 million in new fleet. That s the equivalent of 1700 platforms and resulted in 14% of our machines being replaced with brand new models. The impact of this investment includes greater reliability and the improved technical state of our equipment. Our industry expertise helps find the right solution for you, every time. Investing in safety Every year we invest millions in new fleet for the direct benefit of you. The impact of this includes greater reliability and the improved technical state of our equipment. Moreover, that investment means that the equipment we provide to keep you safe is at its peak condition. It s our goal to make sure that not only do we offer a market leading fleet, but that the quality of our fleet is truly unparalleled too. We make that happen with our research and development team whose full time task is to find, test and develop the safety innovations that tackle issues like material handling at height, entrapment and unauthorised use. Our team also rises to the new and unique challenges our customers face on projects across the UK. As you ll read later along the safety journey (p13), this means unveiling new products that redefine the entire industry. Product 5 6

5 Customer Interaction Expertise passed to you However we engage with you, you can be sure that your protection and wellbeing is at the centre of all we aim to achieve with our expertise. Sales and Surveyors Before you ever hire a machine, our Sales Teams and Site Surveyors make their comprehensive experience available by visiting sites to give their expert guidance on the safest and most effective means of working. Additionally, all of our employees have a full knowledge of our fleet, as well as, other means of working at height. That means, the information you receive isn t just based on what we can offer, but on what represents the safest way of getting the job done. Hire Desk Our Hire Desk team are the central point of contact between your task and our fleet. As such, all of our Hire Desk employees have undertaken product knowledge training to ensure that every time you place an order, we have the people to work with you to make sure that the right machine will be despatched for your task. Safe working, every step of the way Our experience tells us that the work you do at height requires planning and support far in advance of actually receiving the training and equipment that enables you to get the job done. Having worked on many of the UK s largest construction, civil engineering and facilities management projects, as well as spending years providing solutions on many other high-profile industry-sector projects, we know that planning for safe working can never start too early. Listening, learning and making a difference Through our years of experience in the access industry, we ve learned that our greatest achievements always start by listening to you, our customers. All of our employees are primed to engage with the problems our clients face and help deliver solutions. We wanted to go further. That s why we established the Working at Height Best Practice Forum, a Lavendon Group event which brings together the access industry, health and safety groups, major contractors and the end users who utilise our equipment. We host the event with a single goal; to learn more about the areas of concern that matter the most to you. We also recognise that your work to keep your own employees safe never stops changing. 6 Engineering Excellence We know we can only keep you safe in the workplace by delivering the right solutions, in the right place at the right time. To make that happen we invest, train and develop the largest team of engineers in the access industry. After all, it s only by making sure you receive equipment that performs to its fullest potential that we know we re giving you the protection you need. Engineering Excellence Developing excellence In addition to our fully trained engineering workforce, we invest in the ongoing development of apprentices who receive nationally recognised qualifications. Every year we take on more apprentices and give them the opportunity to work in some of Europe s largest depots, whilst also funding college training. Even when our apprentices have finished their training, we don t stop developing them there. We back them all the way, rewarding their skills with greater responsibility and promotions, ensuring that the expertise they build up over the years is retained at the core of our business. The pioneering processes that make a difference Technical Excellence (TechX) TechX is our business commitment to delivering the highest technical standards in all of our depots, regardless of their size or location. That s why all of our depots are maintained to the highest levels of organisation and cleanliness, making them look different to many of the other depots you will have seen anywhere in the world. It s by taking the extra steps to manage our locations that we can guarantee the equipment we provide to keep you safe is given the careful and close management it deserves. Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) As a leader in the supply of powered access, we know that our engineering expertise is paramount in delivering the service that puts your wellbeing first. PPM is our unprecedented approach to enhancing the reliability and effectiveness of our fleet by targeting the equipment that we believe requires greater attention. That means we re able to resolve issues before they ever even become visible. What s more, we know that a machine meeting our highest technical standards will also be the safest machine we can provide. Technical support team We re proud to provide our clients with the complete technical support that reinforces the standards we set in our depots. Manned by a team of employees with engineering and operational backgrounds, our support team can get you back to working safely, as quickly as possible. Safety starts with the technical skills that keep our equipment in peak condition. Corporate Responsibility our engineering commitments We believe we all have a part to play in creating an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable business. One of our biggest commitments, right across the business, is the elimination of breakdowns, with us aiming for less than 0.5% machine failures before This means more reliable machines for you, and a greener planet for us all as a consequence of decreased engineering call-outs to site. Right across our business, we make sure our strategic locations are in the places that can bring safety and productivity to your doorstep. In an average month we make tens of thousands of deliveries to locations across Europe, the Middle East and beyond. In a single day we might deliver equipment for work on major construction projects, airports, utilities, motorways, oil fields and much more, right down to work sites of an individual end user. As a business therefore, we don t just specialise in providing the equipment that keeps you safe, we also make sure that it gets to you safely, from our yard to your project. We ve engaged our drivers through our positive safety culture by encouraging them to report all accidents and near misses. In turn the business looks at the statistics and uses the data to make informed decisions on further safety improvements through engineering solutions, communication, training, policies and enforcement. Whether a piece of our powered access is delivered to you or driven away from our depot, our highly-trained engineers and drivers are trained to complete comprehensive hand overs, helping ensure your work can begin confidently and competently. Not only does that make sure you can get to work secure in the knowledge of your ability, but our team can also offer guidance on the training required to fill any gaps in your knowledge. Having the operational team to help keep you safe is a fundamental part of our work, but we believe in going further. To help engage you with the documentation, regulations and procedures that can keep you protected, we ve invested in new effective communications to bolster your knowledge, including: Initiating a programme to provide additional emergency lowering instructions for operators using QR codes which link to the website. In addition to that, we ve also established a number of Super Depots, helping you to find the complete range of resources, including equipment, training and safety guidance, in one central location. Introducing videos of Toolbox Talks; allowing operators and engineers to quickly and easily learn about issues including emergency descents and the safe management of equipment. On major projects, including the sensitive environments of infrastructure and construction sites, we ve even established our own depots which contain on-site stocks of equipment, a provision for training, engineering and technical support personnel and more. 8 Commitment to H&S New boundaries in training We are the largest working at height training provider in both Europe and the Middle East. Leading by example We believe it s not only important to develop products, but to act and take part in the decisions that make our whole industry safer. That s why we have representatives on the industry s leading safety groups, like the IPAF. We participate because we want to be central to all improvements that can be made to have a positive impact on your safety. We work with groups like the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and major contractors to create new powered access courses where it is considered that more needs to be done. Over the past two years we ve contributed to two entirely new internationally recognised IPAF training courses, both of which offer delegates advanced knowledge. Finally, the emphasis we place on training doesn t just refer to our clients. Our belief in promoting safety through the development of skills and knowledge begins with all of our employees, through our internal training department, the Lavendon Academy. H&S Health and Safety Taking on the industry s biggest issues As the world s largest specialist access rental provider, we believe it is our responsibility to help tackle our industry s most pertinent issues. Our work in this area has already seen us take the issue of anti-entrapment to the top of the industry s news agenda on both sides of the Atlantic. Moreover, our SkySiren anti-entrapment solution, which was developed alongside major contractors, has been mandated by businesses like Skanska UK, Tyco and more. Whilst we know the SkySiren marks progress for the industry, our work won t stop there. From material handling at height, unauthorised use and more, our goal remains to take a lead in tackling all of our industry s safety issues. That might mean developing more product innovations, but it also requires us to create new training programmes, work closely with manufacturers and drive change through the rest of the industry. Comprehensive safety solutions We know that there is no single solution for safe working at height on any project. That s why we tailor our work to suit the broad requirements that can truly make a difference. Our teams offer guidance for major projects at pre-tender and postconstruction stages.
