Mobilization, maintenance, system health checks, project management, data acquisition, data processing, reporting, deliverables, certified well plats all rolled into a single fixed rate. No fees or additional costs for additional rig moves, or for un-planned respuds of the same well. 13 Reducing Crew Size to Cut Costs Customers attempting to lower costs by removing personnel. Competitive day rates leave no room for extra manpower, survey trainees, or technical specialists. Fewer surveyors on the vessel means each must be more capable, more educated, more self-sufficient than before. Supervisory capacity and on-the-job training vanish as crews drop to one man per shift. Surveyors in the field must be increasingly proficient and certified competent across all technology groups and all project scopes.

MOC process for remote operations must be able to address these concerns despite communications challenges The MOC will become more critical in remote applications as an instrument for keeping all parties informed and mitigating risk

33 Future Remote Survey Applications One Oceaneering Internal push to consolidate resources and bring together disparate business units One Oceaneering policy Shared Services initiatives Provision of a Common Operating Picture (AIS, Video, Weather, GIS ) Investigating the potential for handling more complex survey tasks remotely. The remote access technology is there, as is the bandwidth for many applications. Greater utilization of Oceaneering ROV personnel to provide on-site technical support for remote survey systems in lieu of sending a survey technician.

34 Future Remote Survey Applications Likely solutions will involve reduced if not entirely eliminated survey crews, which is already happening anyway to cut costs. Increasing potential of sending technicians offshore while keeping the surveyors and technical specialists at the office to oversee multiple projects.

35 Future Remote Survey Applications Who can be a Survey Technician? Can someone with no formal survey education and no previous survey experience still be trained to fill the role of Survey Technician? IMCA doesn t seem to think so, at least at present Should not be a problem if technician is clearly limited to sensor interfacing, hardware maintenance, and IT activities only Technicians need only install the hardware and get the communications link established so the onshore surveyors can get the work done Consideration must also given to SEMS competency requirements (among others) to ensure that cross-purposed personnel will pass muster

36 Future Remote Survey Applications Final Thoughts Demands for remote survey services sometimes reflect a lack of understanding for the skills or knowledge involved. Must be careful that drive to operate remotely does not lead to cutting corners or degrading standards. Increasing complexity of survey work disproportionately increases the development and administrative work needed for smooth remote operation.
