2 D7 Safety Summit Purpose & Goals: Despite significant progress, crash rates in the Tampa Bay region of the Florida Department of Transportation District 7 have not improved on pace with the rest of the state. Reducing crashes in the District, especially fatal and incapacitating injury crashes requires continued attention to the State Highway System, but enhancing safety on City and County roads must be part of the solution. The purpose of the safety summit is to: Provide a common understanding of District 7 traffic crash issues to FDOT and local agency management level staff. Provide a briefing on current efforts/strategies including the District s planned roll out of an off system safety improvement program including annual commitments for: $500,000 off system safety improvement design support (including LAP design) $2,000,000 off system safety project funding for intersection safety, pedestrian safety, and rural lane departure countermeasures Workshop concepts and frameworks to enhance FDOT and local agency coordination moving forward.

Developed 2006 with the process Approved by FHWA Sept and the FDOT as the Lead Agency Who is involved? 13 Member Cross Agency Executive Committee, 12 Signatories to the SHSP including the MPOAC, 20 Member Steering Committee What are the focus areas? Emphasis Areas (Aggressive Driving, Intersection Crashes, Vulnerable Road Users, and Lane Departure) Priority Areas (Occupant Protection, Impaired Driving, and Data)

5 Florida Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) Vision: To provide a safer surface transportation system for residents, businesses, and visitors. Mission: The state of Florida, utilizing engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency management will focus resources where opportunities for safety improvements are greatest. 14 Highway Safety Grant Program Focused on the following National Priority Program Areas: Impaired Driving, Police Traffic Services, Speed Control, Roadway Safety, Occupant Protection/Child Passenger Safety, Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety, Motorcycle Safety, Traffic Records, and Community Traffic Safety.
