1 Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District Human Resources Department 375 Via Almar Palos Verdes Estates, CA (310) Classified Employee Pipefitter, Sprinkler System JOB DESCRIPTION Supervisor Director of Maintenance & Operations Work Year 12 Months Salary Range 26 DEFINITION Under general supervision, to perform skilled sprinkler maintenance work in the repair, alteration, construction, installation, and maintenance of landscaped areas and lawn sprinkling systems; and to perform related work as required. Training & Experience Any combination of training, education, and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated on this job description and the ability to perform the duties of the specific position for which the selection is being made. A typical qualifying entrance background is working-level experience performing general plumbing and irrigation system maintenance work. Qualifications Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and equipment used in the repair of automatic irrigation systems; Use of hand and portable power tools; Appropriate safety precautions and procedures; Possession of a current California State Driver s License and proof of insurance. Major Duties & Responsibilities Install, repair, modify, and maintain sprinkler systems, clocks and control valves. Operate and perform minor maintenance on digging equipment. Design plans for sprinkler systems. Perform daily preventative and safety inspection and operate District vehicle to and from school sites and vendor locations obeying traffic laws and observing defensive driving practices; wash and fuel vehicle. Examine work orders to assess priority, materials and tools needed, and amount of time; enter information to complete work orders. Page 1 of 5

2 Confer with supervisor on scheduling and technical problems of jobs and to obtain approval to purchase tools, materials, parts. Confer with school site personnel to schedule work projects and to report to work locations. Maintain tools and equipment in secure and working condition. Select tools, materials, and equipment. Wear identification safety and protective clothing and equipment. Research operating and technical manuals, follow schematic drawings, and locate parts and tools in catalogs. Contact vendors by telephone and in person to order and pick-up parts and materials. Perform semi-skilled and unskilled duties as a team member or independently in other trades and general maintenance areas, as the need arises. Load and unload tools and materials and transports to and from job sites. Communicate with school personnel in person and by telephone to resolve and troubleshoot routine operational problems. Brainstorm with departmental staff, users, and vendors to obtain information and problem solve. Perform related work as assigned.by supervisor. Ability to: Operate the tools and equipment used in the repair of automatic irrigations systems; Read and interpret blueprints of water irrigation systems; Use the tools and equipment of plumbing skillfully; Understand the practices and procedures of irrigation trade and apply them appropriately; Make repairs and adjustments to tools and equipment used; Instruct others in the respective trade; Clean and maintain work areas, tools, and equipment; Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Speak English at a basic conversational level; Wear protective clothing/ safety gear in accordance with established standards; Conform to a uniform code or dress standard; Obtain and maintain in current status the licenses and certificates listed on the class specification; Participate in employer mandated training and re-training programs; Comply with rules and regulations of the Classified Service, Policies/Regulations of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, and provisions of collective bargaining agreements. Upper Body Mobility Use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects, manipulate fingers, twist and bend hands at wrist and elbow. o Install, repair, operate, and maintain equipment and manipulate necessary tools. Extend arms to reach outward and upward, use hands and arms to lift objects. o Load, unload, and transport necessary tools and materials. Turn, raise, and lower head, twist and bend at torso. o To view machinery and plumbing systems from different angles, work in small spaces. Lower Body Mobility Walk on uneven terrain, walk on even surfaces. o Transport equipment, materials, and tools to and from vehicle. Strength To lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 75 pounds on a frequent basis. o Transport tools and equipment to and from work site and operate digging equipment. Stamina Climb flights of stairs. o Operate, maintain, and repair clock timing systems and pipes. Smell Distinguish strong odors which may warn of equipment malfunction or danger. o Operate digging equipment and detect gas line breaks. Environmental Requirements High noise level. o Operate power digging equipment. Exposure to sun, rain and wind without effective protection. o Work with outdoor sprinkler lines. Exposure to harsh chemicals/toxic conditions. o Maintain and repair pipes and sprinkler apparatus. Work around dirt/dust. o Maintaining and repairing sprinkler system.
