1 POSITION DESCRIPTION-SCHEDULE A POSITION DESCRIPTION DOCUMENT PURPOSE The purpose of this position description document is to provide you with a clear understanding of your role, and how that role fits within Melbourne Institute of Technology (MIT) as an organisation. This document provides an outline of your key areas of accountability and desired outcomes from satisfactory performance of the role. It does not provide an exhaustive list of tasks and activities that are required to be performed in order to fulfil the role. POSITION DETAILS Position Title: School / Division: Campus: Probationary Period: Lead Systems Engineer Operations Melbourne 6 months ROLE The Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for the management and operations of the IT Infrastructure both in Melbourne and Sydney campus reports to the General Manager. This position ensures the smooth running; availability and adherence to agreed service targets. The position maintains limited down times and explores IT solutions with recommendations to Management. MIT uses key technologies and requires the position to provide IT solutions which realize flexible, coherent and responsive IT services and infrastructure. The responsibilities of the Lead Systems Engineering will be assigned by the General Manager which will include, but are not limited to: Prompt resolution of IT support issues Managing, mentor and develop the IT support team in both Melbourne and Sydney Campus Ensure that the IT systems (hardware and software) applications are fully operational Maintain Systems documentation and develop recovery plans. Tune, document and manage trend analysis of the network and ensure that any poor performance is attended to. Provide input and advise to strategies, policies, procedures, risk management and future planning of the IT infrastructure Ensure that sufficient systems capacity is available to satisfy user requirements and meet agreed to service standards. 1 Page

2 Stay aware of new technology and evaluate its effectiveness for the MIT environment Coordinate and liaise between staff in the Sydney and Melbourne Campuses. MIT ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE MIT business model comprises four (4) key focus areas as guided by its vision: Academia, Finance, Marketing, and Operations. 3 Chief Executive Officer, Managing Director, Director Marketing & Student Engagement, Human Resources Director (pro term) Campus Director and General Manager ORGANISATION CONTEXT The goal of the MIT IT infrastructure department is to maximize the Department s operational efficiency through the use of IT infrastructure, technology and resources to provide a competitive advantage in the process of delivering students & staff services at MIT. The objective of the MIT IT infrastructure department is to manage the MIT s IT Infrastructure and provide services in support of the MIT's learning, teaching and business activities in accordance with MITs operations and strategic objectives. The MIT IT infrastructure department encompasses hardware and software. Maximising the capabilities of the IT infrastructure within budget constraints Employing and managing IT staff at appropriate levels and to develop, retain and deliver quality services Managing the development and implementation of policies and procedures for ICT Establishing a committee structure which will enable input from staff and students Developing and maintaining a seamless ICT infrastructure which meets MIT requirements Building a student centred environment within the ICT area that is welcoming, informative and helpful RESPONSIBILITIES Area Management Outcomes Provide leadership in Evaluate employee performances, set expectations and goals for department and individual staff members. Providing technical advice, analysis and troubleshooting for issue investigation and correction approaches Providing seamless ICT services and effective troubleshooting Providing internal consultancy re ICT for Management 3 Page

4 RESPONSIBILITIES Evaluating of Social media ramifications to the overall system Managing and monitoring all installed systems and infrastructure Lead system development and deployment activities for multiple concurrent operational systems to include patch deployment, development of bug fixes and integration of new systems. Including communication, Moodle and ELO systems. IT and communications infrastructure and systems Quality Control in the IT Infrastructure Department (Preventive maintenance) Effective IT and communications infrastructure and systems (including policies and procedures) that: Are fit-for-purpose and meet MIT requirements (staff teaching and other and organisational requirements) Meet regulations and reflect best practice to support strategic objectives Evaluating interfaces between hardwar4 and software, operational requirements and characteristic of overall systems Continually improve IT infrastructure systems quality Assist in the development of commercially sound business cases for IT Infrastructure development initiatives. Manage contracts and procurement in a cost effective manner ensuring that strategic and operational objectives are considered. Performing system maintenance and administration activities Maintain system documentation, disaster recovery plans. Ensuring hardware/software applications and network components are operational Maintain security, backup and redundancy strategies Meeting software compliance standards Establish preventive maintenance programs to ensure ongoing supply of service and minimise potential downtime Manage the IT Infrastructure team in delivering projects and third level support. 4 Page

5 RESPONSIBILITIES Manage vendor relationships and contracts according to agreed service levels, and terms and conditions. Manage servers through their entire life-cyclefrom creation to retirement. Work in servers and storage Monitoring progress towards goal achievement and implementing timely corrective action (when required) Ongoing learning and self - development Managing and developing staff members (including contractors, as applicable) Participation in MIT management Special projects Relationship Development: Ensure: timely reporting of progress against plan revision of plan to take in to account changed circumstances (when required) appropriate action is taken in order to achieve goals Attendance at relevant training courses and completion of self-development activities Guidance and support provided Delegation of appropriate level of authority Develop and foster a customer services ethos within the IT Infrastructure Department Ongoing training (internal and external) provided to staff Manage and monitor staff performance against the assigned measures / contractor performance against contract Ensure staff meet performance requirements Actively participate in all management meetings including: Adequate preparation On-time attendance Contributing to discussions Ensure special projects and tasks assigned (as may be from time to time) are carried out efficiently and effectively Effective relationships are built with Establish and maintain effective relationships with all stakeholders o o o Students Colleagues throughout MIT professionals in industry Strong effective collaboration is observed with colleagues, including Head of School, to ensure that the responsibilities of the Academic Department are fulfilled Ongoing learning and developing self Attendance at relevant training courses and completion of self-development activities 5 Page

Demonstrated skills in IT trouble shooting in a Mandatory complex IT environments 4. Demonstrated abilities for systematic analysis Highly Desirable 5. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively and consultatively in teamwork environment 7. Further details in relation to the MIT Performance Management System will be provided by our Human Resources Director.
