3 The Impact of Lung Disease Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of both men and women in the United States. COPD is the third leading cause of death in America. Asthma is the number one chronic disease of children. Big tobacco spends billions of dollars each year to lure kids to smoke. The American Lung Association can help employers adopt and implement workplace policies that support a healthy work and lung health. Making the decision to focus on improving air quality indoors, provide resources for employees who smoke and help employees adopt healthier lifestyles will lower the risk of developing chronic diseases and curb rising health care costs.
