2 OVERVIEW CHUCKS & TUX 2018 Chucks & Tux, Growing Kings annual fundraising gala, will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at one Birmingham s most talked about new event spaces Roots & Revelry at the Thomas Jefferson Tower. Birmingham residents are excited about the new energy being felt throughout the city and are eagerly awaiting the next big event to enjoy during the spring months. Chucks & Tux is one of Birmingham s most highly anticipated social affairs of the year. The event is designed to attract a diverse mix of partygoers that include members of the philanthropic community, civic leaders, and both young and seasoned professionals. Chucks & Tux showcases local influencers as members of the event s host committee. Host Committee members help drive marketing and promotion efforts through social media postings, billboard signage, and other media placements. Attendees are encouraged to wear Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers along with their formal attire to match the distinct flare of the event s overall theme. This event provides a high-class experience while creating an environment conducive to an evening full of dancing, laughter, and memories. A unique feature of the event is a silent auction that will include custom designed Chuck Taylors created by winners from our Student Shoe Design Competition. In partnership with the UAB Art & Art History Department and the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, students from Birmingham City high schools will have an opportunity to participate in a school district-wide shoe design contest that will showcase their artistic and creative abilities. The winners of the competition will go through a week-long boot camp that will train them on various elements of design and provide them with the resources needed to bring their designs to life. 3 SHOE DESIGN COMPETITION Throughout the month of February, Growing Kings staff and partners will engage all 7 Birmingham City high schools in a student-centered marketing campaign including on-site live radio remotes, school- wide poster placement, in-class presentations, and more. The campaign will encourage students to customize their own Chuck Taylor Converse on a blank outline available to them through art and design teachers at their schools, or through the Growing Kings website. Beginning February 26, 2018, all interested students will have two weeks to submit their design via or social media using the hashtag #GKChucks. Growing Kings staff will then spend the next 3 days promoting all the entries on the organization s social media pages in order to accurately capture votes. The top 5 students who receive the most votes, plus 1 Growing Kings staff favorite, will be announced on March 19, So many urban students have varied degrees of hidden artistic talent, yet rarely have the opportunity to harness their skills and depth of creativity. As a result, many are never able to realize their full potential and explore paths that expose them to ideals that may produce more positive outcomes. Chucks & Tux provides 6 Birmingham City students with the opportunity of spending their spring break going through classroom sessions at UAB to learn proper design techniques, as well as being given access to the tools necessary to bring their paper shoe design to life on actual Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers. Students will work under the guidance of Department of Art and Art History professors, many of whom are renowned artists and designers themselves, as well as current students within the department. Chucks & Tux leverages the strengths of its partners to bring greater awareness to key stakeholders about our work and advocacy efforts in the mentoring. We value creating stronger communities of practice, which allows for greater promotion of systemic partnerships.
